A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12
Waldegrave has put on another exciting week. On Monday students attended a talk about AI in pharmaceuticals with AstraZeneca. This fascinating discussion covered how various aspects of the STEM subjects make AI possible and the specifics of AI in the pharmaceuticals industry. This Wednesday, four of our A-Level German students took part in a German Debating Competition run by the Goethe Institute. They debated live on zoom discussing: ‘People must be issued with a CO2 foot- print passport’ , they were against the stance. As this is not an A-level topic, they gave up lunch breaks over the past fortnight to research everything, with their performance and team spirit commended by the judges. While they did not make it to the next round, Mrs Robinson and I are incredibly proud of each of them and the girls are relieved to be getting their lunchtimes back! Tonight a number of Year 12 students are involved in our annual Carol Concert at St Augustine’s Church in Whitton this evening from 5pm. Next week our Music students will attend a trip to the Barbican centre to see the Academy of St Martin in the fields perform the A-level set work: Haydn 104, ‘London’. Hopefully the students will have the chance to talk to some performers too. Waldegrave Christmas Jumper Day takes place on Tuesday in support of charity Save the Children chari- ty. Donations can be made via ParentPay in return for wearing Christmas jumpers. On Wednesday, the Year 12 students will get to enjoy their Christmas lunch - I can’t wait to see them all wearing their Christmas hats! Finally the Winter Festival will take place on Friday 13 at 7pm in the School Hall, tickets are available here for £5 each.
MR STAVROU, HEAD OF YEAR 12
BOOK OF THE MONTH
‘I who have never known men’ - Jacqueline Harpman A dystopian tale of 40 women locked in a bunker who have no memory of how they became trapped with all autonomy and romantic opportunity stripped away. The youngest woman’s disorientating narrative centres around the female experience, in an attempt to answer philosophical questions regarding the essence of identity and what truly is an innate aspect of human nature. The book shines a light on the undeniable importance of writing down experience, to maintain sanity through the creation of an imagined future reader. The detrimental consequences of isolation, complete under exposure and grief are explored in immense detail. Knowledge also plays a key role, are we guilty of taking our knowledge for granted? - Zara M, Year 12
