Gradual electrification of road transportation pushes the biofuel market into the aerospace industry and provides new opportunities for producers to expand. Bio-jet fuel can be produced from a variety of feedstocks and conversion technologies and is typically blended in with conventional Jet A fuel; each combination of feedstock and technology falls within one of the eight sustainable aviation fuel pathways in addition to a refinery co-processing pathway.
Bio-jet fuel provides the best opportunity for the aerospace industry to reach carbon-neutral growth, as laid out in the decarbonization goals set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). According to LUX Research, for technologies at commercial scale, securing long-term feedstock supply and fuel off-take agreements remains a barrier to commercialisation; for emerging technologies, techno-economic validation with a pioneer commercial plant needs to occur prior to future project announcements.
