1. RESTORING FIRE, WOLVES, AND BISON TO THE CANADIAN ROCKIES Waterton Lakes National Park and the Blackfoot (Kainai) tribal lands outside of the park are some of the few remaining places where you can get a sense of North America as it was before Euro-American settlers arrived. Help scientists understand how three forces of nature—fire, wolves, and bison—shape this ecosystem. Work alongside members of the Blackfoot tribe to collect data that are shaping national conservation and management policies in preparation for returning bison to one of the wildest, most ecologically intact North American landscapes. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Strenuous DURATION: 7-10 days FIELDING MONTHS: May, Jun., Jul., Aug. U.S.: $2,450–$3,500 | U.K.: £1,825–£2,600

2. CLIMATE CHANGE AT THE ARCTIC’S EDGE Perched along the Arctic treeline on the seacoast within North America’s largest wetland lies Churchill, Manitoba— the “polar bear capital of the world.” This area is extremely sensitive to small environmental changes. Warming temperatures have led to shrinking areas of polar sea ice, freshwater wetlands that are drying up, and less extensive winter snowpack that melts earlier. Help researchers to gather evidence of climate change to better understand what the future may have in store for the environment. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate DURATION: 11 days

Your help is desperately needed to ensure a positive outcome for this conservation story. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate D URATION: 12 days FIELDING MONTHS: Jan., May, Aug., Oct., Nov. U.S.: $3,575 | U.K.: £2,675

33. SOUTH AFRICAN PENGUINS Once a thriving population, the African Penguins of Robben Island (where Nelson Mandela was once imprisoned) are in a precipitous decline. Oil spills and competition with fishermen over food resources, most importantly sardines and anchovies, threaten these waddling seabirds. Experience these charismatic penguins as you monitor their nests, track their movements, photograph individuals, and maintain seaside habitat. Help scientists improve methods to bring these penguins back from the brink of extinction. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate DURATION: 12 days FIELDING MONTHS: Mar., Apr., May, Jun., Jul., Aug. U.S.: $3,195 | U.K.: £2,375

34. INVESTIGATING THREATS TO CHIMPS IN UGANDA Within the largest remaining tropical rainforest in East Africa, chimpanzees and other primate species are struggling to find enough food, driving them to increasingly raid farmers' crops. Channel your inner Jane Goodall and investigate what is causing the mysterious decline in fruiting tree productivity. As you wander through this gently rolling forest, you will observe wild chimps and monkeys, help capture and band fruit-eating birds, and examine fruiting tree patterns, revealing how climate change is impacting this landscape. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Strenuous DURATION: 12 days FIELDING MONTHS: Feb., Apr., Jun., Jul., Aug., Oct. U.S.: $3,050 | U.K.: £2,275

It was long thought that war caused the collapse of Angkor; however, new evidence suggests that years of severe droughts and floods are the true culprits. Uncover the details of how these ancient peoples were able to adapt to a period of great socio-political and climatic change. Join scientists in Battambang, Cambodia on this

35. TRACKING ASIATIC WILD DOGS IN THAILAND In the hilly forests of the Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary and Khao Yai National Park roams one of the most endangered canids on earth. Asiatic wild dogs, also known as dholes, are poorly studied and often wrongly classified as “pests.” With their habitats dwindling, the species can now only be found in a handful of countries. The data you collect will help provide wildlife managers with the information needed to create conservation and restoration policies for dholes and their prey. 39. RECOVERY OF THE GREAT BARRIER REEF The spectacular beauty of the Great Barrier Reef attracts divers from around the globe, but the health of this area is imminently threatened by climate change. Rising sea surface temperatures are leading to repeated coral bleaching events and stronger cyclones, which physically damage reefs. Additionally, increased nutrient loads in the water caused by human activities mean that nuisance macroalgae is the first thing to grow back after a storm, smothering out new coral growth. Help researchers to test scientific methods to best remove this macroalgae in order to promote the regrowth of new coral for future generations on the Great Barrier Reef. ACTIVITY LEVEL: Strenuous DURATION: 7 days FIELDING MONTHS: Apr., Sep. U.S: $2,125 | U.K.: £1,875

Snorkel with researchers in their quest to collect data on local manta ray populations and protect this World Heritage site. Capture close-up images of manta rays, help tag individual mantas to better understand the impact of fishing and tourism on this ecosystem, and support critical conservation efforts that aim to protect this oceanic gem. Manta rays, stingrays, and reef sharks are just a few of the numerous species that live in the crystal waters of Australia’s Ningaloo Reef, and are key to assessing the health of the reef and understanding how this ecosystem functions. CAN’T GO? GIVE! Climate change research is hard to do, and even harder to fund. Just ask our scientists. And that’s why we need your help. Contributions from volunteers don't cover all of the costs of our expeditions; we depend on other donations to make up the difference. There are many ways to support Earthwatch besides joining an expedition. Help ensure we can keep pace with the growing environmental crises of our time by making a gift today . OTHER WAYS TO GIVE: • Become a member or make a gift to the Annual Fund to support our mission • Sponsor a student or teacher fellowship • Become a corporate partner and help to improve sustainability practices through employee engagement and community programs

• Give directly to a research project • Open an Expedition Fund and start saving for you or a loved one • Include a legacy gift to Earthwatch in your estate plans DONATIONS AND
