SHAPING PROGRAMS, INSPIRING FUTURES Jan. 07, 2026 Dr. Castillo’s vision and dedication in STEM and Humanities empower students, faculty, and the community to thrive By: Amanda L. Nelson, Marketing & Events Coordinator Luna Community College is proud to spotlight Dr. Geno Castillo, Interim Academic Director of STEM and Humanities, whose leadership, dedication to students, and passion for education continue to strengthen both the college and the communities it serves. Born and raised in the great state of New Mexico, Dr. Castillo’s journey into education and STEM is grounded in service, curiosity, and a lifelong love of science. Before entering academia, he proudly served in the United States Marine Corps, an experience that shaped his leadership style and instilled in him the importance of discipline, mentorship, and setting a positive example—values he carries with him every day at Luna. Dr. Castillo earned his Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in University Studies with a minor in Geology and his Master of Science (M.S.) in Natural Sciences with a concentration in Geology from New Mexico Highlands University. He later completed his Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) at Walden University, further solidifying his commitment to high-quality education and student success. Since joining Luna Community College in August 2016, Dr. Castillo has spent over nine years serving the institution with dedication and pride. As Interim Academic Director of STEM and Humanities, his role extends far beyond the classroom. He oversees both departments, managing faculty, supervising academic programs, coordinating course offerings across the main campus, three satellite locations, and area high schools through dual-credit programs. He also ensures that all programs meet state, federal, and accreditation standards, a responsibility he approaches with care and precision. When asked what he enjoys most about his work at Luna, Dr. Castillo is quick to say that he doesn’t consider it “work” at all. For him, education is a passion. He values the strong camaraderie across departments, the support from college administration, and the collaborative environment that allows faculty and staff to thrive. As a veteran, he also deeply appreciates Luna’s commitment to honoring service members, particularly through its recognition of Veterans Day. One of Dr. Castillo’s recent highlights includes the Art Exhibit held on December 4, 2025, in the Humanities Building. The event showcased the incredible talent of Luna’s art students and drew an impressive turnout from both the campus and the community. Dr. Castillo commended Ms. Leota Harriman for her outstanding instruction and mentorship, noting that the students’ work reflected both skill and dedication. He also expressed pride in the entire STEM and Humanities faculty, as well as appreciation for the satellite managers—

Tina Gallegos (Springer), Emily Ulibarri (Santa Rosa), and Stacy Montoya (Mora)—for their ongoing efforts to support students and ensure access to quality education. Dr. Castillo’s inspiration for working in education stems from the impact of great instructors and mentors in his own life. He believes that high-quality education is essential to student success and sees teaching as a cycle—knowledge passed from one generation to the next, creating lasting impact. Through his role, he hopes to guide students not only academically, but also personally, by modeling integrity, leadership, and commitment. “I hope to impact students by setting a positive example,” he shares. “That was one of the most valuable lessons I learned in the Marine Corps.” His goal is to help students succeed in their chosen fields while contributing to the community by helping develop informed, engaged, and responsible citizens. Outside of work, Dr. Castillo enjoys traveling—especially to Hawaii, a favorite destination. One quote that continues to guide his work and outlook comes from President Ronald Reagan: “Some people spend an entire lifetime wondering if they made a difference. But, the Marines don’t have that problem.”

Luna Community College is grateful for Dr. Geno Castillo’s leadership, service, and unwavering commitment to students. His dedication embodies the college’s mission of creating opportunities and shaping futures— one student at a time.
