A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9

This week we have celebrated many successes with seven students from the year group visiting Southampton University to graduate from the Brilliant Club educational program. Students worked closely with a tutor from Royal Holloway for several weeks and worked on their poetry skills and analysis which will help them when they get to university applications in the future. Our graduates were Aneshu, Ava, Celeste, Dee Dee, Grace, Lilian and Riannon, who all produced some amazing pieces of work about ‘Recycling The Poem’. Congratulations to all of them! Clemence P in 9PBE has been selected to represent her home nation of France in two International Olympiads this summer: the EGOI 2023 (European Girls’ Olympiad in Informatics) held in Sweden in July and the EJOI 2023 (European Junior Olympiad in Informatics) held in Georgia in September. Clemence had to sit several tests and attend a camp to be selected. We are so proud of her - it’s a great honour to represent France and we wish her the best of luck. Congratulations to Anya S in 9PCL for her amazing efforts at Basketball! Anya’s team, Richmond Knights U14’s won first place in the Nationals! Anya has also been selected for the England U14 squad that will play against Scotland and Wales in a tournament on 27 and 28 May in Dundee. Lacey M in 9PBE received a commendation medal for representing the sea scouts marching in the coronation parade. She was also part of their world record breaking most people to be simultaneously piping all together. This week 9EFG are topping the epraise points chart with Greta W and Nora P in the top two overall. As Borough Sports approaches we are aiming to encourage students to attend track club and field event practises. Students will need to attend the clubs and trials in order to be selected for the school team. As our DofE expeditions draw closer please support your child in keeping up with all their sections and getting them signed off as soon as they can. Finally, as we incorporate more chromebook use into our curriculum, please can I ask that parents / carers ensure that students bring in a fully charged chromebook each day along with the charger.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

He Said / She Said by Erin Kelly “The betrayal flayed my skin, but his cowardice chips the bone. It poisons the marrow.”

Laura thought herself the hero when she saved a young woman from a brutal attack. This would go on to change her life in ways that no one could have predicted. Now she and her boyfriend Kit live constantly in fear, tiptoeing around society, trying to remain as invisible and off the radar as possible. However Laura knows that something is hidden, she is never quite seeing the whole picture of the story. This gripping thriller leads to crazy character developments and

horrifying revelations up till the very last page. ~Recommended by Miranda H, Year 9 student
