P ennsylvania Company conducts over 1,100 real estate auctions & over 3,000 personal property auctions Hurley Auctions celebrates 25 years in business

REENCASTLE, PA — The Hurley Auc- tions legacy started back when its founder and president, Matthew Hurley was just a young boy. Some boys dream of becoming a po- liceman or a firefighter when they grow up, but Matt Hurley had his sights set on something different. His desire to be an auctioneer started when his father, Gene, took 5-year-old Matt to a farm auction. “All the way home, I remember saying, ‘When I grow up, I'm going to be an auctioneer.’” In 1982 Matt conducted his G

first non-paid auction at a fam- ily reunion. In high school, his guidance counselor wasn't sure how to help the teen achieve his dream. “There’s not much you can do as a guidance counselor to help someone that wants to be an auctioneer because you had to be an apprentice at the time in Pennsylvania,” Hurley said. “I tried, but no one would sponsor me because they didn't want competition.” When he was 19, Hurley went on a two-year mission for his church. Upon his return in 1993, his desire for the auction block was stronger than ever.

“I got home on a Wednesday, and on Thursday morning, one of my favorite auctioneers, Bob Benshoff , called me and said, ‘Hey, do you still want to be an auctioneer? I am looking for an apprentice.’” His call was a blessing. He served as an ap- prentice with Benshoff for two years. “I decided that auction- eering is what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.” Henceforth, in 1993 Hurley Auctions was started. Matt ran the business from his sum- mer kitchen off Route 997 in Quincy, PA. Without an auction house to operate from, all sales were conducted out of a rented warehouse in the former Tom- stown Community Center. He even got his father and mother hooked on auctioneering. Barb received her auctioneers ap- prentice license in 2001. Gene apprenticed under Matt from 1996 to 1998, and remains an active auctioneer in Hurley Auctions to this day. In 1998, Matt purchased 11 acres betweenWaynesboro and Greencastle and built what is known today as The Legacy Center. It is now the headquar- ters of Hurley Auctions with satellite offices inWest Virginia and Florida. Matt’s dedication to the in- dustry has allowed him to reach several milestones in his profes- sion including: • 2004 Pennsylvania State Champion Auctioneer. • 2013 Pennsylvania State Champion of Champions Auc- tioneer • 2013 Elected as President of the Pennsylvania Auction- eers Association • 2016 Pennsylvania Auc- tioneer of the Year Award Recipient • 2016 Florida Sunshine State Bid Calling Champion • 2018 Feature on the cover of the National Auctioneers As- sociation Magazine • 2018 Appointed as Trustee for the National Auctioneers Association Educational Board • Conducted over 1,100 real estate auctions and over 3,000 personal property auctions All six of Hurley's children are involved in the business today. In 2017 Kaleb Hurley received his Pennsylvania Auc- tioneers license beginning the third generation of auctioneers in the Hurley Family. “Thank you for a wonderful 25 years. We look forward to serving you during the next 25 years!” 
