THE K I N G ’ S BUS I NE S S God has designed to awaken people to a consciousness of the penalty of broken laws. ‘ ‘ Fear hath torment. ’ ’ The wave of crime sweeping over this country could be stayed, in a measure, if we had more stringent laws and more adequate speedy punishment of criminals. It is a kind of a joke now with criminals. They are protected by parole and probation and by all kinds of sentimentalists. A brutal negro shot a-man in his own home, shot his wife and then assaulted the wounded woman, and has confessed to seven other murders during'the last ten years and the “ Housekeepers’ Association No. 1” of sentimental women plead for his salvation from the gallows! Let us speed up"the truth of .the Word of God ; let us put a little real “ pep” into the messages; let us use more of the loving Lord’s messages who said: “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous. “ l e serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?” (Matt 23:29 and 33.) “ But, and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; And shall begin to smite his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunken; The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looketh not for him. and in an hour when he is not aware of. And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Matt. 24-48-51.) L$t us put fear into the hearts of men who trifle with God’s words, whether they are men in the pulpit or in the pew. Let us have less salve and more salvation. Let us do less trimming and more truth telling. Let us have less pussy-footing and more of the lion heart. Let us have less of the “ try and be good,” and more of the “ flee from the wrath to come.” A little less of getting to heaven when they die and a little more of escaping from hell while they live.. “ Put Godly fear into men’s lives.’.’ —T. C. H. j » Ife SEVEN Thousand and More Quite frequently we get letters from country pastors who are so situa ted that they cannot come in touch with Bible conference movements, in dicating the tendency for some faithful witnesses to be seized with des pondency because of the on-march of destructive criticism. If they stand true to the Book they find no fellowship with other leading ministers in their towns. One cannot wonder that at times they feel like sitting under the juniper tree and thinking, “ I only am left” and they seek my job “ to take it away” (1 Kings 19:14) But God has .been doing some things in the past few weeks to show His faithful witnesses that He has left seven thousand in Israel who have not bowed the knee to Chicago University. The Northern Baptist Convention at Buffalo was preceded by a special conference, called by leading Baptist ministers who did not propose to give their sanction any longer to the propaganda of critics or the iron grasp cer tain unsound leaders wer<; getting on the machinery of the denomination. As a result of this conference demands were, made upon the convention
