OCTOBER 10, 1930 BAPTISM AND TEMPTATION OF JESUS. Golden Text: “ This Is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Mat. 3:17. LESSON TEXT Mat. 3:13-4:11. (Read Mat. 3:: 1-4:11; Deut. 6:4-16.)

(11) Then the devil leaveth him, and, be­ hold, angels came and ministered unto him. to confess: He did not permit bap­ tism as a mere form. John’s baptism was from Heaven. (Matt. 21:25). Jesus, desired 'to fulfill' all righteous­ ness; to be subject to God’s ordinances. In infancy He was circumcised. Mary was purified. He went with His par­ ents to the. temple. In Israel’s history, it was at Betha- bara that they crossed the Jordan and entered the Promised. Land . Joshua succeeded Moses. Now Jesus is to suc­ ceed John the Baptist. Moses died in the wilderness. 5 The Law was to be superseded by Christ. Moses testified of Joshua whom God selected, and now John testifies of Jesus whom God sent. Jesus was now of legal age to enter the ministry. (Num. 4 :3;. 8:24-26). John shrank from the task. He felt as did Peter when he said, “ Depart from me for I am a ginful man, O Lo'rd.” (John 13:6). (4:1) Then- was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil'. (2) And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungered. (3) And when the tempter -came to. him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command. that these stones be made bread. (4) But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by Outline (1.) Now Jesus presents Himself for baptism. (a). Why Was He Baptized? He needed no repentance (change of at­ titude towards God). He had no sins
