Step Into Motion Dance Festival a big hit
VANKLEEK HILL | More than 650 students tested their moves by slow dancing, hip- hopping, and stomping their way to suc- cess Friday at the 2014 Step Into Motion Dance Festival, held at Pleasant Corners Public School. The festival was started seven years ago to expose students to the joy of dance and to encourage teachers to incorporate it into the school day, said Gisele Paquette, a tea- cher at Pleasant Corners Public School and founder of the festival. “I want kids to feel comfortable with dance,” she said. “Dance is often overlooked because teachers do not feel comfortable with it. The trio of Sheldon DeSousa, Gus Har- vey-Little and Troy Sexton wowed a packed gymnasium both on the stage and in the audience as DeSousa raced around the gym floor tapping out a beat as he spun around the room.
The festival saw groups such as Toronto’s Rhythm Works and the Pleasant Corners Pu- blic School dancers show students what can be accomplished through creativity, prac- tice and hard work. Dance professionals such as Moon Runners and É cole De Danse & D’Arts Christiane Raymond PCDM offered students workshops in a variety of genres from hip-hop to contemporary dance. The event offers teachers a chance to try their hand at instructing in dance and to show students it can be done, said Paquette. A dancer as a child, Paquette also wanted to use the festival to help students consider dance as another pathway towards physical fitness – particularly for boys who may not be interested in sports.
