THE GALLERY: UNDERGRADUATE ACHIEVEMENT

Christopher Cross Senior, Major: Philosophy Minor: English, Public Policy Leadership University of Mississippi Lambda Pi 2016

Favorite courses: Seminar on Plato’s Republic, Leadership in Public Policy Settings, History of World War One and Introduction to African American Literature What have you done to excel in school? First and foremost, all of the success I have had in school, as well as in other areas of my life, I owe to the grace of God. Yes, Ole Miss is a great school for academics and I have cer- tainly achieved academically, but true success here is in how well one masters the social experience here that is unpar- alleled to any other school. At the University of Mississippi, where everything is associated with issues of race and politics, I have had to develop the ability to discuss topics which many find uncomfortable and challenging, embrace vulnerability to build relation- ships and maneuver in spaces where I was the only minority. Awards/Honors: I am a member of the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College, Lambda Sigma Honor Society, Omicron Delta Kappa Senior Honor Society as well as Who’s Who of the

University of Mississippi.

Other extracurricular activities: Presi- dent of the Ole Miss Student Alumni Council, Chief of Staff to the President of the Black Student Union, Ole Miss College Democrats, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs Advisory Council, Ole Miss Associated Student Body NPHC Senator and Informal Student Elections Campaign Consultant How did you find Kappa? Well, before I was Spring 2016 initiate of the University of Mississippi Chapter, the Lambda Pi of Kappa Alpha Psi ® , I had decided in sixth grade that I would pledge Kappa. Growing up in Merid- ian, MS I attended Magnolia Middle School where Brother Rufus Wright (Meridian (MS) Alumni 2000) was my principal. On one occasion where I was in his office, I saw the letters of our fraternity on a paddle above his desk and I inquired about it. Then he and his father, Brother Charles Wright (Frankfort (KY) Alumni 1977), sent me to Kappa Kamp while it was still held at Piney Woods Country Life School. While at Kappa Kamp, I had the privi- lege to hear past Grand Polemarchs

Dr. Ullysses McBride and Dwayne M. Murray, Esq. speak. I was so impressed with their speeches and personality, that I decided when I become a Kappa, I would want to be just like them. When I was in eighth grade I had the privilege to be a part of the first intake class of the Meridian Kappa League. Also, one of my favorite older cousins, Regis Cross (Lambda Pi 2002) influenced my deci- sion to join our Noble Clan. Where do you see yourself after graduation? After graduation I will most likely work for three years with Teach for America in the Mississippi Delta. After that I plan on going to law school and graduate school. My end goal is to be the vice president of governmental relations for a Fortune 500 company.
