Ivan Garcia Senior, Major: Communication Sciences and Disorders Illinois State University Kappa Alpha 2016

Favorite Courses: My favorite courses would have to be Clinical Phonetics (Fall 2015), Neurobasis (Spring 2016) and Introduction to Neurogenic Disor- ders (Fall 2017). What have you done to excel in school? I have done many things at Illinois State to excel in school. I have managed to find what works best for me in regard to time management and studying habits. This has helped me maintain a 4.0 GPA throughout my col- lege career. In addition to that, I have also made it a priority to get involved as a student leader on campus. I have worked to leave my legacy at ISU and that has helped me excel not only in school, but also as an individual. Any named scholarships: • I was awarded the Laurine Reiske Scholarship in the Spring 2016 semester at Illinois State Univer- sity. • I was awarded the Garrett Van As- duall Memorial Scholarship in the Spring 2017 semester at Illinois State University. • I was nominated for the Robert

G. Bone Scholarship, the highest award at Illinois State University, during my Spring 2017 semester. Awards/Honors: • I have been on the Dean’s List every semester since I have been at Illinois State University. • I was the first member in the Kappa Alpha Chapter to receive the Hiliary H. Holloway, Esquire Achievement Academy Scholar- ship. • I am the first member in the Kappa Alpha Chapter to serve on the Grand Board. Other extracurricular activities: • President of the Black and Latino Male Movement • Polemarch of the Kappa Alpha Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fra- ternity Inc. • Resident Assistant for University Housing Services • Mentor for Diversity Advocacy • Student Fundraiser at Ruffalo Noel Levitz • Service Area Manager at Univer- sity Housing Services

How did you find Kappa? I found Kappa Alpha Psi because of my mentor Miles Spann. He was the first Nupe I met on the yard. He was a leader on campus, a great student, and just had his way around campus. I had no idea he was a member of Kappa until I noticed his lanyard one day. I asked him about his organization and he told me it was his fraternity. He even introduced me to the rest of the Nupes on the yard, and without a surprise, they too had their way around campus. All around me I was seeing Nupes achieve and make it look easy. I went online and did my research on Kappa Alpha Psi ® and told Miles I will put in whatever work is required to join this Noble Fraternity. The rest was history because I did not stop until we were finally able to have intake at ISU.
