FROM THE COURTROOM TO THE TENNIS COURT

HOW I SPEND MY TIME OUTSIDE OF THE OFFICE

Some people probably imagine that lawyers are all work and no play, but, in fact, we’re often just as passionate about our hobbies as we are about our day jobs. In my case, that’s not quite true — there’s no way that sailing, playing tennis, or tinkering around my house can compare to helping my clients get the compensation they deserve after a tragedy — but my hobbies come in a close second to my work, family, and friends. Tennis in particular is a sport close to my heart, and it has been on my mind a lot considering January is National Hobby Month. I’ve been playing the game since I was 7 years old, which means I have almost 50 years of experience on the court. It’s freeing to grab my racket and square up to the net after a long day. Not only do I break a sweat, but I also get all of my frustrations out by whacking the ball. (Don’t tell anyone, but sometimes I imagine that fuzzy yellow ball is the opposing counsel). I played competitively through college and still love spending time with my buddies on the local United States Tennis Association team. Not much has changed over the years — I’ve still got a great swing — but I just can’t get to the ball quite as fast as I used to! Basically, when I’m not in court, there’s a good chance you can find me on one. In warmer weather, I supplement my tennis games with sailing trips. My son, Johnathan, and I often make a father- son day of it and spend hours on the water each summer. Usually in the winter, we’re stuck counting down the days

until the weather turns, but this year he has kept me busy helping him with college research and applications. It’s a time- consuming process, but I’ve enjoyed sharing my two cents and encouraging him to dream big for his future! When I have a spare moment between work, tennis, and my teenager, I like to tinker with various projects around the house. I live in an old home, and between time and the Massachusetts elements, there’s always something needing my attention, whether it’s saltwater-blasted siding or falling- apart window frames. The house certainly keeps me on my toes, but the mindless work can be a nice break from the mental gymnastics of a day studying my cases, trying to ensure the best possible outcomes for my clients. That said, my work is still my true passion. There’s nothing more satisfying than securing a client the justice they deserve, whether their injury was the result of a dog bite, a slip-and-fall accident, or a car crash. Being able to help people in their time of greatest need is both humbling and empowering — and I always look forward to coming into the office to give every case my all. If you or a loved one has been injured through no fault of your own, Peter and I can help. Call us today at 508-775-9099 or visit CapeInjuryLaw.com to schedule your free consultation.

THE CAPE COD BIZ BUZZ

There are quite a few chiropractors in Cape Cod, but in our experience, few are as dedicated, experienced, and thorough as Dr. Joshua Lindauer, the man behind Health First Rehab, Inc. “I offer a multidisciplinary approach to care — it’s not just ‘snap and crack,’” Dr. Lindauer explains. “We combine massage, therapeutic exercise, and adjustments as clinically appropriate for our patients.” Dr. Lindauer has run his Cape Cod clinic for 20 years now, and we’ve been lucky enough to work with him for most of them. When clients come to us for help with a car accident or slip-and-fall case, we often refer them to Dr. Lindauer for treatment because we know he gives high- quality care. He’s particularly adept at helping car accident victims get back on their feet.

“I pride myself on being a compassionate physician,” Dr. Lindauer says. “I can help people physically, but I understand a lot of them are going through emotional challenges and headaches, too. They’re worried about getting their car fixed, or having to pay extra bills. I understand that and can hopefully help them work through it.” To put it plainly, Dr. Lindauer is a great guy. He truly cares about his patients, and that shows in his treatment. Plus, he can always see trauma patients within 24 hours of a call, which is an incredible gift for our clients who’ve been left hurt, scared, and in pain after a car accident. If we refer you to Dr. Lindauer, know you’ll be in the best hands in town.To

PUT TOGETHER A KIT. If you’re unable to go to LEGOLAND, take a few minutes to visit a local LEGO retail store to pick up a LEGO kit the family can put together or dig a well-loved one out of your attic. Challenge yourself and family members to make the tallest tower before it falls, or get creative by placing the same set of LEGO bricks in different bowls and seeing what everyone creates from the pieces. WATCH A LEGO MOVIE. There are several LEGO movies you can choose from for National LEGO Day. Put in family favorite “The LEGO Movie” and join Emmet and his friends as they fight to save the world. Hit the dojo with Lloyd, who is secretly the Green Ninja, as he and his ninja friends fight Lord Garmadon to protect Ninjago City in both the animated film “The LEGO Ninjago Movie” and the TV series “Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu.” And let’s not forget Batman and Robin as they fight to save Arkham City in “The LEGO Batman Movie.”

From giant, colorful building blocks to intricately designed kits, LEGO has been a source of entertainment and delight for people of all ages for over 80 years. This toy’s popularity is not surprising, as there is endless potential for what you can create with LEGO bricks, but their impact stretches far beyond mere building blocks. LEGO-related video games, movies, and even theme parks have sprung up around the world for people to enjoy. National LEGO Day falls on Jan. 28, giving you an opportunity to delight in what this toy is all about. If you want to celebrate with your family, consider the following activities. PLAN A TRIP TO LEGOLAND. With the new year just getting started, why not plan a family vacation? WE TAKE SLIP-AND-FALL ACCIDENTS SERIOUSLY AND SO SHOULD YOU!

During the winter, there’s nothing like sitting next to the window with a blanket and a hot cup of tea to watch the snow fall. Winter weather is a part of life in New England, and it is often quite beautiful — until you have to go outside. Snow and ice can spell disaster when allowed to linger on a sidewalk or parking lot. Slipping on an icy walkway can mean more than just an embarrassing video uploaded to the internet. Slip-and-fall accidents are incredibly dangerous and can lead to serious injuries, including strained muscles, broken bones, lacerations, and head injuries. Always practice care when walking outside after winter weather. While snow and ice increase the risk of a slip-and-fall, these kinds of accidents can also happen inside a building.

Factors that can contribute to a fall inside include: • Waxed or wet floors • Objects in busy walkways • Loose surfaces • Potholes in heavy foot traffic • Crowd trampling When you’re out in public, always be aware of your surroundings. Keep an eye out for signs of danger and always follow posted and verbal safety instructions. Additionally, if you’re going to be outside in winter weather, be sure to wear shoes with proper traction and avoid walking on snowy or icy walkways whenever possible. Whether it’s inside or outside, property owners in Massachusetts have a responsibility to keep their properties in a reasonably safe condition. This

means shoveling snow and salting icy walkways, cleaning up spills quickly, and putting up clear signs warning of impending danger. When property owners fail in this responsibility, they can be held liable for any injuries that occur on their property. Slip-and-fall cases can be difficult to prove, so time is of the essence. If you were injured in a fall due to someone else’s negligence, call 508-775-9099 and speak to an experienced slip-and-fall attorney today!

YOUR GW NUGGET OF WISDOM: DON’T FALL FOR THE RESOLUTION TRAP!

January is a tough month. Between the post-holiday slump (cookie coma, anyone?) and the pressure to make New Year’s resolutions (I need to lose HOW many pounds by swimsuit season?!), it’s easy to slip into a funk. We can’t help you with the dessert hangover, but we can pass on some wisdom about New

Year’s resolutions. The truth is, they’re a trap, and there’s no reason to let them get you down! Instead of setting resolutions, which almost everyone fails to follow through on anyway, try setting goals for 2020 instead. Kiss those unrealistic dreams goodbye, and say hello to planning S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) goals for the new year. You’ll feel a whole lot better about yourself, and odds are you’ll accomplish something, too! To learn more about S.M.A.R.T. goal setting, visit MindTools.com/Pages/Article/Smart-Goals.htm.

1 4 From the Courtroom to the Tennis Court: Blair Talks National Hobby Month Meet One of Our Go-To Chiropractors Building Memories One Brick at a Time The Secret Danger of the New England Winter Don’t Fall for the Resolution Trap! Meet the World’s First Airport Therapy Pig MEET THE WORLD’S FIRST AIRPORT THERAPY PIG HOW LILOU AND ANIMALS LIKE HER CALM STRESSED-OUT TRAVELERS Imagine you’re navigating a vast airport on a busy Saturday, shouldering your way through crowds and struggling to hear the PA system over the clatter of 1,000 wheeled suitcases. Suddenly, you see a pig wearing a hot pink sweater waddling toward you on a leash. Do you stop in your tracks? Does your stress level drop? Do you laugh out loud when you see its pink nail polish? If you answered “yes” to any of the above, then you can sympathize with the passengers, pilots, flight attendants, and staff at the San Francisco International Airport. They get to enjoy visits from Lilou, the world’s first airport therapy pig, on a regular basis! As part of the Wag Brigade, the airport’s cadre of (mostly canine) therapy animals, Lilou wanders the airport with her humans, bringing joy, peace, and calm to everyone she meets. Lilou may be the only pig of her kind, but airport therapy animals have been a growing trend for the last few years. According to NPR, as of 2017, more than 30 airports across the U.S. employed therapy dogs, and these days, estimates 2 3

land closer to 60. The San Jose and Denver airports have therapy cats, and the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport even offers passengers the chance to play with miniature horses before boarding their flights. Therapy dogs started appearing in U.S. airports after the 9/11 terror attacks, which changed American attitudes about flying. They did so well at helping passengers calm down that airports began implementing permanent programs. Some have pets on hand 24/7 to assist passengers, while others host animal visits every few weeks or months. These days, regular travelers have fallen hard for their local therapy animals, many of whom even have their own Instagram accounts and hashtags. So, the next time you’re traveling, keep an eye out for a friendly pup, cat, pig, or horse to pet. A bit of love from an animal just might improve your trip!
