DIFFA EXPANDS OUR MISSION! DIFFA: Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS raises awareness and funds grants to organizations that provide treatment, direct care services, preventative education programs, and advocacy for individuals impacted by HIV/AIDS, and associated challenges, such as homelessness, food scarcity, and mental health issues. Since 1984, DIFFA has emerged from a grassroots organization into a national Foundation with chapters and community partners across the country, granting more than $53 million to hundreds of HIV/AIDS organizations nationwide. DIFFA is one of the oldest funders of HIV/AIDS services and education in the United States. Combatting misinformation, ignorance, and prejudice is vital in combatting HIV/AIDS, homelessness, food scarcity, and mental health issues. About DIFFA by Design In 2022, DIFFA’s signature fundraiser Dining by Design was reimagined into DIFFA by Design. DIFFA by Design showcases the latest in design trends worldwide, while raising money to help combat HIV/AIDS, homelessness, food insecurities, and mental health issues.

An artful sculptural pod with an internal cavity that acts as a comforting cocoon, inviting guests to unwind and find solace. The pod’s external texture is skillfully crafted using Baltic birch wood, resonating with the biomorphic design principles that celebrate the gentle scalloping form found in nature. Inside the pod, guests are enveloped in a peaceful ambiance, courtesy of the felt lining that creates a calm and quiet space for guests.

The “SECOND + CHANCES” project brings this idea to life by repurposing discarded wood and pipes sourced throughout the city to create a community-driven installation.

NEW YORK SCHOOL OF INTERIOR DESIGN We must use what we have learned from past devastating events during the AIDS crisis to take a leadership role in preventing future devastation by climate change. As members of the design community, we have an obligation to use technology and sway social behavior to help combat climate change. By looking at the way technology (pharmaceutical in the case of AIDS) was used along with changes in social behavior, we can lead by example through technology relevant to climate change and developing new social behaviors to avert a different, yet just as important, crisis.

SCHOOL OF VISUAL ARTS High-tech solutions can minimize poverty and reduce economic and social inequality. Housing can be floating, since people can now work from anywhere. A nomadic life provides hope for the homeless. This hot air balloon with its cyberpunk aesthetic utilizes various parts from electronic waste to upcycle by-products, waste materials, and useless or unwanted products to create a design that has both artistic and social value.

ROCHE BOBOIS WITH ROCKWELL GROUP Roche Bobois’s new initiative, Eco8, an in-house tool that allows the company evaluate its products for sustainability and environmental impact mirrors DIFFA’s theme of sustainability. The minimal, evocative environment is an abstract vignette with verticality and soft, organic forms. The walls are covered in a mirrored stretch fabric with a hint of transparency that allows colorful, playful neon messages about DIFFA and sustainability to shine through. The wall surface, combined with dramatic lighting, also offers a moment for self-reflection, prompting the guest to see their

WESTERN SENSIBILITY X FOCUS LIGHTING Western Sensibility and Focus Lighting invite you to enter The Artist’s Studio, an environment with no limits that explores creative possibility and the language of color through a sustainable lens. The Artist’s Studio features Daphne Sweet’s investigation into tropes of antiquity with the piece Swing, Sensibility, Sweet and serves as acclaimed architect, Kevin McClellan’s, bespoke gradient furniture debut.
NOVITA COMMUNICATIONS + MAIARELLI STUDIO The Fat of the World is an art installation and a statement. Artist Cynthia Reynolds, whose work uses and takes inspiration from found material, explores the themes of excess and waste, interrogating our interpretation of the highly engineered and mass-produced packing materials we so routinely rely on.

student design initiative DIFFA’s Student Design Initiative is supported by a generous grant from the Angelo Donghia Foundation. Three of New York’s most prestigious design schools created installations for DIFFA by Design 2023. Celebrated industry members guided the student teams through the design process from conception to execution, while working within a strict budget. In addition, students were educated about the causes DIFFA supports and encouraged to join in the fight by weaving one of the causes into their designs to help spread awareness to our audience.
