ROCKLAND | The local hockey school is getting more than a little international at- tention this year as several of its students compete for their home countries in world championship events over the spring break. Ariel Kapulkin, a 15-year-old student at the Canadian International Hockey Aca- demy (CIHA), is part of Israel’s men’s U18 national team in Bulgaria at the Internatio- nal Ice Hockey Federation’s (IIHF) World U18 Championship for division three group A players. The six-day tournament wrapped up over the March 30 weekend. It’s the first experience of international

competition for the Minor Midget-level player. Guy Girouard, CIHA hockey ope- rations director, noted that Kapulkin has demonstrated strong skating and shooting skills during his time spent so far in the aca-
both the CIHA and their homeland as part of the South Korea squad at the Women’s Challenge Cup of Asia Tournament in Har- bin, China earlier in the year. South Korea finished third behind tournament winner China, and rival North Korea. The two Parks now head to Asiago, Italy in early April. for the IIHS World Women’s Championship for division two, group A players.

CUMBERLAND | The Cumberland Cobras got a little advance help before the start of the soccer season. The U15 girls squad received a $500 com- munity aid donation from Coun. Stephen Blais to help with the cost for new uniforms as the team prepares for its 2014 summer debut in the Ontario Youth Soccer League (OYSL). The OYSL is the highest level of competi-
tion for youth soccer clubs in Ontario. Most of the OYSL teams are from the Toronto area which makes the Cumberland U15 Cobras’ achievement even more significant. The Cobras took first in last year’s Eastern Region Soccer League playoffs. Their OYSL matches will be spread across five wee- kends in the summer months which means a large financial commitment from the pa- rents of players.
