Five counties support local colleges

Kathleen Wynne, who is also Ontario’s agri- culture and food minister, reverse Guelph University’s closure decision and support a two-year moratorium on any shutdown of either the Alfred or Kemptville campuses.

“I don’t think Guelph (administration) was very upfront with these colleges,” said Mayor Robert Kirby of East Hawkesbury, during the UCPR council’s March 26 session. “I hope the government will look into it.” Both of the counties councils argue that the moratorium, if allowed, would give the provincial government time to work with the French colleges to develop alternative operating plans and also allow students who were already planning their studies for the 2014-2015 term to continue with their programs. “People need time to adjust,” said Mayor Gary Barton of Champlain Township. Both Mayor Barton and UCPR Warden Jean-Paul St-Pierre noted that the an-

nounced closures for both the Kemptville and Alfred college campuses creates se- rious problems for both students close to finishing their degree studies and those in the middle of their programs. It also creates problems for the local college administra- tions who have to work out ways to deal with on-site stock like cows used as part of animal husbandry programs. The South Nation Conservation Authority (SNC) board has also joined the lobby cam- paign for the two colleges. The SNC board approved a resolution during its March 20 annual general meeting to send letters to the agriculture ministry, Guelph University, and local MPPs calling for the two colleges to remain open.

But the mayors of all the municipalities in the Five Counties are not going to let Alfred College shut down without a fight. Both the United Counties of Prescott-Rus- sell (UCPR) and the United Counties of Stor- mont-Dundas-Glengarry (UCSDG) councils are joining forces to demand that Premier
