Exciting News at Gilbert Physical Therapy Congratulations to Our New Partners, Dr. Chris and Dr. Jon

A t Gilbert Physical Therapy, of your ailments. Our therapy is based on the most current research and evidence, which ensures that patients who receive care from us are getting treated with proven techniques and strategies. This summer, Gilbert Physical Therapy reorganized the clinic to better promote our current values and expand our expertise. We have merged with Madden Physical Therapy in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. You will not see any changes on the surface, and nothing will change in terms of the service we provide. We simply will have a larger, more capable team extended to the East shore as well. The changes we’ve made make us more efficient and allow us to keep serving our community with the highest possible standards. The biggest change, I am proud to announce, is the promotion of Dr. Chris Sierotowicz and Dr. Jon Milliron to partners in our practice. Dr. Chris Sierotowicz grew up in the suburbs of Mechanicsburg near Lewisberry. He has always been drawn to helping others, and we specialize in treating pain by finding and resolving the root cause

this, combined with his own personal experience with physical therapy,

inspired him to pursue a career as a physical therapist. He has his undergraduate bachelor’s degree from Bloomsburg University, and his Doctorate of Physical Therapy fromTemple University. Dr. Sierotowicz enjoys having the opportunity to diagnose people and help them return to doing the activities they love. He is also a very organized and efficient worker. Dr. Jon Milliron is originally from Altoona. He received his bachelor’s degree from Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania in 2008. After graduating from Saint Francis University with his doctorate in physical therapy, Dr. Milliron began treating a wide range of orthopedic conditions. He specializes in treatment of the spine, sports rehabilitation, manipulative therapy, and outcome-based treatment. Dr. Milliron has a strong desire to serve his community and provide the highest quality of physical therapy.

the practice continue to grow. During the years these two men have been at Gilbert Physical Therapy, I have watched these men grow as clinicians. I’m proud to call them partners. We have some new faces in our clinic, too. Sadly, our previous aides wrapped up their work at Gilbert Physical Therapy in order to return to school, but we have a new group of wonderful people taking their place. Don’t be afraid to say hi and get to know the new staff the next time you come in. As we work our way into fall, we will continue to expand our workshops and promotional days, which include free screenings, so stay tuned!

It is my honor to welcome Chris and Jon as partners, and I am looking forward to watching

The Effects of Negative News They Say Ignorance Is Bliss … But Is It Healthy?

It’s nearly impossible to log on to social media or turn on the TV without seeing something distressing. It could be a local crime story, a terrorist attack, or — at the very least — reactions to one of the most polarizing presidents in American history. It’s nearly impossible to log on to social media or turn on the TV without seeing something distressing. Instead of dwelling on what’s troubling, let’s focus on how to protect our mental health. The Psychology of Bad News A study by Psychology Today found what we already knew: People feel sadder after watching negative news than positive news. Got it. But here’s what we didn’t know: People who watch negative news feel worse about pre-existing worries than people who watch happy or neutral events. That means people watching the news don’t just feel anxious about the world, they feel more anxious about their own lives. British psychologist Dr. Graham Davey, who specializes in the effects of media violence, says negative news can affect how you interact with the world around you. As you consume threatening news, you’re more likely to spot threats in your day-to-day activities that aren’t there, which leads to anxiety.

Another recent study found that the journalists themselves who are constantly exposed to graphic images score higher on PTSD, depression, and alcohol consumption than the average American. Why Is the News So Negative? As news media revenue goes down and people become desensitized, news organizations feel the pressure to show emotionally relevant material such as crime and accidents. At a basic level, for something to be “newsworthy”— negative or not — it needs to be the exception to the rule, not the norm. That means watching the news might give you an inaccurate view of what daily life is like in the world. How to Fight the Negativity It’s important to understand important issues of the day. But when the news becomes too much, psychologists encourage you to take a break with some good news — or no news at all. Your TV might have you think the only three events in the world are war, crime, and sports. But advances in medicine and technology happen all the time! Seek out those stories, or take a break from news altogether. That’s when no news can become good news.

WHY ARE WE AFRAID? The Psychology of Back Pain

H ave you ever heard the phrase, “It’s all in your head?” I’ve heard it numerous times, often from other medical professionals when they describe a patient to me. I don’t mean to offend with this phrase, because pain is a very real thing. But it’s also a phenomenon that occurs in the mind, and the mind can be changed. The main driving point for most pain is fear. Nine out of 10 people would say their back is the area of their body they’re most afraid of injuring. We associate back injuries with disability, loss of function, and poor quality of life. Why are we afraid? Like everything else, it stems from a fear of the unknown. Things we don’t understand scare us, and the back is a large and complicated component of your body that houses the spine and affects just about everything. When I had my first back injury, I was burdened with fear. Was my entire life going to change? Could I make it worse? I found that overcoming the fear involves learning, accountability, and control.

Let’s say you want to jump into a pool, but you don’t know how deep the water is. Someone yells, “It’s 20 feet deep!” Then, everything changes. You don’t hesitate to jump. Why?

• •

You had learned more about the situation. The new knowledge made you feel in control.

• That control made you feel accountable for whether you jumped or not.

The more you learn about your back pain, the more control you have over the pain, and the more it’s up to you whether you feel better. Seek advice from the experts. Dr. Google is no substitute for a blog written by a medical professional. When I learned how to combat the symptoms of my first back injury, I wasn’t just unfearful — I was invigorated. I wanted to beat the symptoms, and I knew how to do it. It took discipline, but I used learning to take control and become accountable. If you seek advice from experts, I know the same will happen for you!
