Exodus 20:4: Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or tnat is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them:a for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God. visiting the iniquity of the fathers up* on the children unto the third and fourth genera tion of them that hate me; 6 And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. 32:1 And when the people saw that Moses de layed to come down out oi the mount, the peo ple gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. 2 And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me. 3 And all the people brake off the golden ear rings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron. 4 And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods. O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. 5 And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To-morrow is a feast to the LORD. 6 And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offer ings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play. 7 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted them selves : 8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods. O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. John 4:19 The woman salth unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. 21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. 22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship; for salvation is of the Jews. 23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to wor ship him. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. G olden T ext: “God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth” (John 4 :2 4 ). D evotional R eading: Psalm 100. T he C ommand (E x . 20:4-6). I SRAEL was prohibited from using any image or likeness of anything as an ob ject of worship. God is the One whom none has ever seen or can see; the One who dwells in light unapproachable, light that is as darkness to fallen man. The reason for this prohibition is seen in the fact that any visible object of worship would center the worshiper’s attention in the object rather than in the unseen Lord. Moreover, the wor ship of images was forbidden to Israel in order to mark their separation from the heathen nations who were their neighbors. Furthermore, in worshiping idols Israel would become servants of the work of their own hands rather than of the One whose hands had fashioned them. God is re vealed to men only in the person of His only begotten Son. Where images and like nesses are found as objects of worship, the person of Christ is little known. Outline and Exposition I.
II. T he R ebellion (E x . 32:1-8)
While Moses was meeting with God in the mount, the people became restless and desired something they could see upon which to repose their trust, and they ap pealed to Aaron to make for them a god or gods (v. 1). Their action reveals the natural state of the human heart, ever ready to depart from the unseen but living God for something tangible, though dead, in direct disobedience to the first and great commandment.
