is no rainbow, or a deaf man that there is no thunder, or a man who has a sense of smell that- there is no fragrance, is just as reasonable as the man who says there is no reality in faith. The telescope does not create the stars; it only enables the eye to see them. The sun does not make the landscape; it only reveals it. Faith is the telescope; faith is the sun; faith is the power to see what to the natural eye is hidden. —S elected . O CTO BER 11 Banishing Shame “ Then shall 1 not be asham ed, when I have respect unto all thy commandments” (Psa. 119:6). Whenever we err, we prepare ourselves for confusion of face and sinking of heart. If no one else is ashamed of me, I shall be ashamed of myself if I do iniquity. Our first parents never knew shame till they made the acquaintance of the old serpent, and it never left them till their gracious God had covered them with sacrificial skins. Dis obedience made them naked and ashamed. W e, ourselves, will always have cause for shame till every sin is vanquished and every duty is observed. . . . No shame in the presence of man will hinder us when the fear of God has taken full possession of our minds.—C harles H addon S purgeon .

into the armory, where they showed him all manner of furniture which their Lord had provided for pilgrims, as sword, shield, helmet, breastplate, all-prayer, and shoes that would not wear out. And there was here enough of this to harness out as many men for the service of their Lord as there be stars in the heaven for multitude. 'fevr- J ohn B unyan . "If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth” (Mk. 9 :2 3 ). W hat is so wonderful, so unique in the Christian life, is that in every believer there are such undreamed-of possibilities. On the human plane we are hopeless and helpless. Our friends assess us at our true value. They know our weaknesses, our defi ciencies, our limited capacity, how few are our talents, how puny our possibilities. They have us sized up clearly, sometimes cruelly. But when a child of God steps out in faith and on God, and discovers the secret of taking hold of God, of taking Him at His word by faith, then a new factor is introduced which confounds all calcula tions, and nullifies all estimates. —N orthcote D eck . It will not be easy to maintain this atti tude. It will cost to mortify our members which are upon the .earth, and to yield our selves always unto God as those that are alive from the dead, and our members as instruments of righteousness unto Him; but here lies the secret of a resurrection experi ence where sin has no more dominion. W e shall have learned that victory does not lie by way of struggling and by trying to im prove "the old man,” but by reckoning him dead, and letting the new Man, Christ Jesus, live His overcoming life in us. I —H. E arnshaw -S mith . “ T he L ord o f hosts is with us; the G od o f Jacob is our re fu g e’ (Psa. 46:11). W e reach back into the past and lay hold of the mercies promised to, and re ceived by, the long-vanished generations who trusted in Him and were lightened. The river is still full. The van of the pilgrim host did, indeed, long, long ago drink and were satisfied; but the bright waters are still as pellucid, still as near, still as refreshing, as abundant as at any earlier time. Nay, rather, they are fuller and more accessible to us, "God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.” —A lexander M aclaren .
