brooks, so panteth my soul after thee, O G od" (Psa. 4 2 :1 ). All things live in their own element-B the cattle on the plain, the fish in the sea, the bird in the air. Thy element is God. Thou art the only creature in this universe that art not now in thine element; thou art an anomaly in the order of creation. . . . Thou are the least happy of all creatures. The bird carols in the air all the day, but thou hast not a day quite undimmed by tears. W hy is it thus with thee? . . . It is because thou art not living in thine element, and the element in which thou livest is not adequate to thy powers . . . W hy shouldst thou pant any more? The river that makes glad the city of God can make glad the cities of men. Thou canst find thine element as easily as the hart findeth the water brooks. "Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters." —G eorge M atheson . O CTO BER 15 For a Little While "Y e greatly rejoice, though now fo r a little while, if need be, y e h ave been put to g rief in m anifold trials” (1 Pet. 1:6, R .V .). Mysterious often is the way of the child of God whose will is truly set for walk in the Spirit. The biographies of godly men and women are full of incidents of mystery, suffering, and what we regard as tragedy. But although they could not understand the divine actings, and waited for their solu tion in a fairer clime, yet in submissiveness they accepted all from God’s hand, resting in faith, that what was willed or permitted, was wrapped up in His perfect love. —A lfred M athieson . O CTO BER 16 Verdict of the Spirit "I know that in me (that is, in my flesh.) dw elleth no g o o d thing" (Rom. 7:1 8 ). This is a strong, sweeping statement, but such are all the statements of the Spirit of God. There is no uncertainty about them. Uncertainty is the result of imperfect knowl edge, but the Holy Spirit is all-knowing, and this is His unmistakable utterance con cerning the flesh. . . . If we follow God's program as laid down for us in Scripture, we must admit His thought about the flesh, namely, that it is the abode of no good thing, and the more readily we subject our thinking to God’s mind on this and other subjects, the more effective will be our witness.r-jW. M allis . "In every thing by prayer . . . . with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God" (Phil. 4 :6 ). So let us take up each day as it comes: each common day, not waiting for the days which may be uncommon; for indeed it is in the common days that Christians oftenest fail. For these common times the cultivation of the habit of telling the Lord Jesus all is all-important. Practice that habit. Set your self to use the secret steadily and also promptly, and it shall become to you, by grace, a second nature. In Christ you can thus go in His known strength to face the O CTO BER 17 A Second Nature

O CTO BER 19 Surpassing Glory

"Being m ade so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a m ore excellent name than they” (Heb. 1 :4). O f what faculties are angels the sub jects! O f what intelligence, purity, power, loveliness, and elevation of mind! What, then, must be the perfections of Him who contrived and formed angels; who with a word called them into being; who preserves, informs, directs,, controls, arid blesses them forever! Great and excellent as they are . . . how amazing, then, must be the per fection of His character—hpw great, how wise, how good!—T imothy D wight . O CTO BER 20 One Confidant “It is better to trust in the L ord than to put confidence in man" (Psa. 118:9). Christians often look to man for help and counsel, and mar the noble simplicity of their reliance upon their God. Christian, mix not thy wine with water; do not alloy thy gold of faith with the dross of human confidence. W ait thou only upon God, and let thine expectation be from Him. Covet not Jonah’s gourd, but rest in Jonah’s God. Let the sandy foundations of terrestrial trust be the choice of fools; but do thou, like one who foresees the storm, build for thyself an abiding place upon the Rock of Ages.—C harles H addon S purgeon . O CTO BER 21 Active Faith "But be y e doers o f the word, and not hearers only” (Jas. 1:22).
