FINDING THE CAUSE OF NECK PAIN

There is one more factor that often is not spoken about, but it’s a frequent cause of neck pain and discomfort: Sleeping Issues . Sometimes, sleeping in a certain position or sleeping on amattress or pillow that is too soft or too hard will lead to neck pain. Oftentimes, this pain will appear to be chronic, as the sleeping issue is likely something that you experience day after day, causing the pain to return regularly. It may be helpful to rule out sleeping concerns as a reason behind your neck pain by assessing your sleeping conditions and making any changes that you think may be necessary. Adjust how many pillows you sleep on, the position you sleep in or even your mattress! ARE YOU SUFFERING WITH WHIPLASH FROM A RECENT AUTO-ACCIDENT? According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over 2.5 million rear-end collision car accidents occur in the U.S. every year. This type of car accident can cause an injury called “whiplash,” which occurs when the neck extends beyond its normal range of motion. Our physical therapists will work with you to help you recover and relieve your pain. At first, very gentle hands-on therapy, massage, ultrasound, and electrical stimulation may be administered to relieve the pain and gently help swollen tissues recover. Gradual progression is then made with restoring range of motion and beginning very gentle exercises. As you progress, the pain reduces and your range of motion improves, strengthening and postural exercises will be introduced to help you have a full recovery. HOME OFFICE ERGONOMICS When working from home, ask yourself, “how do I maintain my posture throughout the day?” Do you catch yourself slouching frequently? Do those last hours of the workday leave you achy? If you are experiencing aches and pains, especially in your neck or back, poor posture is probably to blame. Fortunately, posture can be improved with ergonomic changes: 1. Make sure that you are at a proper height with your desk chair and computer, so you don’t have to slouch or lean forward.

the floor, and try not to cross your legs. Make sure there is a small gap between the back of your knees and the chair. A chair with strong back support and padding is recommended. 3. Take time to exercise. Get up every 30 minutes or so and take a small walk, at least for a minute or two. This will help in loosening up your muscles and joints, as well as initiating a stronger blood flow. 4. Try using a standing desk as opposed to a traditional sitting desk. Investing in a standing desk can help in decreasing the risks of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity.

Health Services and I couldn’t be happier with the care they received. One of my clients told me that it was a night and day difference from his previous PT.
