CENTRAL WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY Board of Trustees May 18, 2019 ACTION – Approval of Naming of Hertz Concert Hall in McIntyre Hall

Hertz Hall was constructed as a music facility in 1962 and named for Dr. Wayne Hertz, who taught at CWU from 1938 to 1974. Hertz laid the foundations for CWU’s nationally recognized music program. He served as chair during his entire tenure and led the development of music education in Washington state. In 2004 CWU opened a new music facility, McIntyre Hall. In 2010, CWU requested state funding to replace Hertz with a health sciences facility. With very few exceptions, systems located within Hertz are original equipment and more than 50 years old. Equipment and infrastructure have far out-lived their usefulness and have no residual value. Because of the iconic role of Wayne Hertz in the history of CWU, the university seeks to commemorate his work after the old music building is demolished later this spring. The university proposes to name the 600-seat concert venue in McIntyre Hall after Dr. Hertz, who died in 1996. CWUP 2-10-080 requires commemorative names to be authorized by the Board of Trustees. This request has gone through the appropriate steps outlined within the University’s policies on Facility Naming and Naming Approval (CWUR 1-60-040), and comes to the Board of Trustees with the full recommendation of the CWU Cabinet and President.

We recommend the following motion:

The Board of Trustees of Central Washington University hereby approves the naming of the 600- seat concert venue in McIntyre Hall to be the Wayne S. Hertz Concert Hall.
