and is an opportunity to discuss one-on one.” Historical societies, investments #rms and community organizations welcomed hun- dreds of visitors to the show, creating a family atmosphere that only VankleekHill is capable of. With musicians at corridor intersections and a little bit of Zumba sweat in the cafeteria, the place was packed and animated. “Why don’t we have that kind of gathering in Hawkesbury?” said visitor Annette Staf- ford. “I came last year and I absolutely love it. !ere’s a lot of interesting stu" and facts, you meet old friends, the food is good and the atmosphere is pleasant. Vankleek Hill is a vibrant community for all ages and the other towns should take notes”. !e show also had a more serious com- ponent, with some advice sessions and pres- entations from Primerica, for retirement investments, and Hillcrest Funeral Home, about funeral prearrangements. “It’s always a hard time emotionally and #nancially,” said funeral director Mark Henderson. “If you have a large family, there will be disagree- ment and sometimes, during our family session, we have to act as a referee to #nd a compromise. Making things right when you are under emotional stress is hard and that why prearrangements are important for a respectful transition”. History was another popular subject at the show and many historical societies had booths, from Dunvegan to L’Orignal.

Re-enactments, registries and volunteer guides, history needs a boost to stay alive and everyone is welcome to jump back in the history books. “When you get older, the past sometimes bite you in the ass and it’s not always a bad thing”, said visitor Andrew Nicholson. Our collective history is one to remember and as elders, it’s part of our duty to transmit that knowledge to the next generation.” !e old was truly the new new at the 50+ show, showing that retirees and soon to be ones still have a healthy attitude with great aspirations and values.

!e 50 + Attitude! show was a sensational hit October 18 in VankleekHill, with visitors and exhibitors from all across the region mingling together for a day of information gathering and discovery. Retirement and the path leading to it aren’t what they used to be and mid-life careers and aspirations have changed the landscape.!e 50+ crowd is more active than ever and expectations are higher in terms of quality of living, leisure, business and espe- cially planning. But in the Internet age, it’s easy to get lost and feel overwhelmed by the all the inputs and choices available. !at’s why many exhibitors brought pamphlets and facts to the table at the salon. “Most people know that the hospital is expending, but many don’t knowwhere it’s heading in terms of services and access,” saidHospital Foundation executive director, Pierre-Luc Byham. “In 2018, we will be o"e- ring cataract surgery right here in Hawkes- bury and telemedicine is facilitating access to care and brings a whole new dimension of services to the patients. Also, the 50+ are all tellingme that they are busier than when they were actually working, so it remains a challenge to #nd volunteers for the hospital and the foundation. A show like this one helps a lot getting the information across
