If you’re constantly facing lower back, hip or knee pain—you might be feeling arthritis. According to the Centers for Disease Control, roughly 54.4 million U.S. adults are diagnosed with some form of arthritis per year. As we age, the cartilage in our joints wears down, causing painful bone on bone rubbing, inflammation, stiffness, and pain. While there is no cure for replacing cartilage yet, it is possible to alleviate the symptoms of arthritis, by improving your joint movement, muscle strength, balance, and coordination. It’s even possible to eliminate symptoms entirely, depending on the amount of arthritis you have. If you have regular aches and pains, keep reading. We have a solution. What Causes Neck Pain? There are a large number of culprits that could be behind your experience of neck pain, including accidents, such as a car accident or a slip-and- fall accident, as well as sporting injuries. The reason why neck pain

frequently becomes so severe is due to the fact that blood vessels have to pass through your neck to reach the head. A spasm in the neck muscles could lead to constricted blood circulation, and therefore migraine headaches. What’s worse, since the neck is connected to the spinal column and therefore connected to the nervous system, pain in the neck can quickly develop into tingling or numbness in the hands, arms and fingers, which can be uncomfortable and frustrating when you are going about daily tasks. When neck pain develops as a result of a pinched nerve, the radiating neck pain can result in severe headaches, and in some cases, even migraine headaches. The pinched nerve can cause pain to radiate from the neck into the skull and can cause a disruption to typical nerve patterns. Working with a physical therapist can help you address pain caused by a pinched nerve, and therefore can reduce the severity of headaches that develop as a result of neck pain.

WHAT IS ARTHRITIS?

There are many types of arthritis. One of the most common forms of arthritis is osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is when the cartilage and joint surfaces degenerate, which can cause pain and stiffness. The hip and knee are common areas that are affected. Symptoms of arthritis Symptoms can vary, but may include stiffness especially in the morning or during periods of inactivity, a grinding sensation in the joint, swelling, and pain. An X-Ray will likely show decreased joint space, signifying the decrease in joint cartilage. Typically, the muscles surrounding the joint have become weak. How arthritis affects function When arthritis affects your hip or knee joint, it can limit proper mobility of that joint. Therefore, the gait cycle is disturbed, which can cause even more strain on multiple joints. Stiffness during periods of immobility can make transfers difficult, such as standing after sitting for awhile.

What can physical therapy do for arthritis? While it is known that arthritis cannot be reversed, physical therapy can help to become more functional. At Excellcare, we look at the strength around the joint, and focus on stabilization. The tailored exercises and treatment will help to support the arthritic joint, which can assist in tolerating daily activities better. The therapist will also educate the patient on what to do in order to decrease stiffness. Some examples include doing specific stretches throughout the day.
