They are all made with local products from within 100 kilometres radius of Clarence- Rockland. Sharing shelf space with Gagnon’s own creations are special homemade food items fromother culinary crafters in the Prescott- Russell region. Duck and goat pâté rubs shoulders with baking liqueurs made from local cherries, gooseberries, raspberries or strawberries, while marinades and chu- tneys made from melon, apple or peppers compete with shelves full of homemade jams, jellies, and butters of cherry, red pepper, and cranberry. Then there are the balsamic vinegars, condiments, and others seeking their share of attention from browsers. For Carole Lavigne and Louyse Côté of the Eastern Ontario Agrifood Network (EOAN), this is both a unique selling point for the new boutique and also a significant step forward for promotion of Prescott- Russell’s agricultural sector. The EOAN is assisting Gagnon to expand the stock available for her shelves by putting her in touch with other homemade food crafters and produce suppliers registered with the network. For many, the primary salespoint for their wares has been through seasonal farmers markets and craft shows. “The more they (food crafters) can get their products known, the more people will be able to buy them,” said Côté. “This store is accessible to more peo- ple,” said Lavigne, “especially for seniors. People don’t have to go far out of their way tofindtheseitems.Thatreallyistheproblem for most people.”

Marie-France Gagnon makes some of the most excellent jellies and preserves and other kinds of homemade delicacies anyone would be pleased to serve their guestsaspartofacandlelightsuppermenu or enjoy themselves with hot chocolate on a lazy winter Sunday. Now the St-Isidore resident is sharing those culinary delights with the public as Les Gourmandises Caprines, one of the newest little boutique businesses to set up shop in Rockland’s original downtown section along Laurier Street. Gagnon is also inviting others who enjoymaking their own preserves, jams, jellies, andotherhomemade food products to offer their wares for sale in her shop. “It (food) is my passion,” said Gagnon, during last month’s official opening of her shop. Gagnon’s own wares are all based on her grandmother’s family recipes. That is the secret behind her own culinary offerings and her plans for her boutique include having a small on-site kitchen area set up so that visitors dropping in to browse and Photo Gregg Chamberlain Marie-France Gagnon welcomes everyone toshareherloveofgoodfoodandespecially good homemade foods at Les Gourman- dises Caprines. In both economic and food health circles, the new prevailing idea is the 100 mile theory for both a healthy diet and a sustainable local economy and that is one of the marketing strengths of Gagnon's new business. Everything on the shelves is made using local produce and by local food crafters within the Prescott-Russell region.
