it happened,” Const. Gauthier said. Police are certain that at the time of the accident, the vehicle carrying the two women was headed south on the road when it crossed over into the opposing lane and collided with a north-bound vehicle. At that point along the road a third vehicle was stopped in the southbound lane and signalling for a turn off of the road into a private driveway. Snow flurries that day had made road conditions slushy. Neighbourhood resident Pierre Goddard reported the wind was gusting in from the east at between 10 and 15 kilometres an hour. “Maybe even 20,” he said, adding that the particular stretch of road can prove very treacherous during the winter. “When it drops below zero overnight, sometimes you end up with a skating rink out here,” Goddard said. “This is a bad place for accidents.” Two days before the fatal accident, God- dard saw a car go off the road near the Champlain-Du Golf intersection because of “black ice” conditions. The driver of the car was a Cornwall woman who had come to visit family in the area. Public works snowplow trucks were out over the Dec. 31 weekend and again on Jan. 2 to clear the road and also spread road salt.

Henrie Street and Du Golf Street intersec- tions near the edge of the village boundary. Five people were involved in the acci- dent. Three received minor injuries but the two Bourget women, who were riding in the same vehicle, died as a result of the colli- sion. The OPP Technical Traffic Investigation unit was brought in to examine the site and determine the cause of the accident. As of press time OPP media liaison Const. Serge Gauthier reported there were no further updates from investigators. “We’ll probably never know exactly why

Small kitchen fire sparks warning vision@eap.on.ca Rockland

Two days before Christmas and Clarence-Rockland firefighters find themselves dealing with a kitchen fire call. The afternoon summons Dec. 23 came from a residence near the Edwards Street and Laurier Street intersection. The fire was extinguished without any injuries to anyone. Homeowners are reminded to be careful when using stoves and ovens to prevent the chance of grease fires or anything igniting as a result of contact with an open flame. Also check to make sure that all electrical appliances have cords and plug-ins in good condition. Homeowners with fireplaces should also have their chimneys checked.
