SPRING AHEAD

Time to Take Action

Things are just starting to warm up around Illinois with March here, and we’re all hoping for warmer weather in the months to come. Daylight saving time starts on March 11, pushing us one hour ahead. As we all spring forward, it’s a good time to take a step forward in life, as well. Making it through the winter can be tough, but you did it — you got through the worst Mother Nature could throw at you! But did you have to push through more than bad weather this winter? Struggles at home, in your relationship, at work, or with your finances can be difficult to cope with when the weather is miserable and you’re in hibernation mode. You may have been sitting on these thoughts for the past several months, obsessing over them without taking action, or maybe you’ve simply avoided thinking about them altogether. But spring is the perfect time to take action and face some of the difficulties you’ve tried not to face for the past few months.

You’ve spent all season stuck inside the house thinking about your problems. Do some research now to decide your next steps. Prepare yourself for what you may face down the road, and come up with coping strategies. From my experience, March, April, and May are the

busiest months for family filings, and taking the extra time to put things in order can help you be more prepared for what might happen. Taking the initiative after months of inaction is one of the best ways to spring forward into your new life. Scheduling an interview with an attorney as soon as possible can help you achieve your end goals. An attorney can help you build concrete plans for your future. We at Sullivan Taylor & Gumina can help you secure a future, so don’t hesitate to call us. We’re always willing to help you get your life in order. Meet with an attorney and start preparing to execute your plan. Now is the time to act. -Joseph Emmerth

Don’t Forget to Clean the Heart of Your Home THE IMPORTANCE OF SPRING CLEANING YOUR UTILITY ROOM

The start of spring brings everyone’s favorite seasonal chore — spring cleaning! As you dust, vacuum, organize, and declutter, don’t forget about the one room that often gets neglected. This year, give special attention to the utility closet. The utility closet houses your furnace, boiler, water heater, A/C junction, and other similar large appliances. Homeowners often forget about these appliances because they are out of sight and out of mind, and this can cost a lot in the long run. Like all the other rooms in your home, this space needs to be kept clean. Dust, for instance, can be hard on HVAC systems. Over time, it accumulates in the HVAC intake and clogs the air filter, reducing its effectiveness and efficiency. This results in a short lifespan for your system, higher power bills, and a poorly heated or cooled home.

• Family homes (three or more occupants) with no pets or allergies: 3–6 months. • Family homes with at least one pet or minor allergies: 2–3 months. • Family homes with multiple pets or allergies: 1–2 months. In addition to changing the air filter, it’s important to schedule a routine inspection of your home’s HVAC system. This includes an inspection of the appliances themselves and any connecting ducts. Dust, dander, and mold can accumulate in the ducts and spread throughout the home, which can lead to health issues, including respiratory problems. A routine inspection will identify potential problems in your HVAC system. On top of that, you can get these systems professionally cleaned and maintained. These are simple steps that will keep your home’s air systems running smoothly for years to come. Plus, you’ll be ready for the summer months ahead!

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE YOUR AIR FILTER?

• Homes with minimal foot traffic (single or double occupancy) and no pets or allergies: 6–12 months.

A DISCUSSION WITH RORY SCHER

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

What types of services do you offer?

There are few things I enjoy more than introducing new resources to my readers. Today, I’m excited to introduce Rory Scher, a licensed marriage and family therapist at the Life Counseling Institute. I asked Rory a series of questions to help you get to know her better and to discover what Rory and her partners can do for you!

Here at the Life Counseling Institute, we have a wide range of services. Our therapists are trained in emotion-focused therapy for couples counseling and in exposure and response therapy for treating OCD and anxiety disorders. We do a lot of work with teens and children, assisting them in adjusting to changes in life: divorce, new schools, bullying, and academic investment. We also counsel for depression, codependency issues, grief, addictions, and life transitions. Patterns tend to repeat themselves. It’s important for couples to understand that just because they’re no longer married doesn’t mean the relationship’s core problems will magically disappear. I encourage couples considering divorce or who are already in the process of separating to really invest in understanding and resolving their core relational issues so they don’t continue these patterns with each other post-divorce or with the next person they meet in the future. What advice would you give couples considering divorce? That’s awesome, Rory! How can people learn more about you or contact you? Our website, lifecounselinginstitute.com. We list all of our services. There are biographies on each of the therapists working here, as well as blog posts for those interested in some practical tips. Or give us a call at 630-269-2886.

What led you to do this type of work?

All of us here at the Life Counseling Institute see therapy as an opportunity to help others work through barriers that are keeping them from being able to live their life to its fullest. We all believe that even one person in a family has the power and opportunity to effect change in not only their own life, but also in the lives of those around them — be it a spouse, child, parent, friend, or peer. We each chose this field as a way to foster hope, as we discover their inner strengths and find how to better cope with the changes life can unexpectedly bring.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

Being a part of someone’s life. It’s such a unique experience and privilege to share a space with someone who is hurting, who has just suffered a loss — emotional, financial, or relational — or who is unsure how to adjust to a new set of circumstances, and to help them heal and become stronger on the other side of it.

KEEPING UP WITH YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

What You Need to Do to Stay On Track and Push Forward

March is the month of spring time and rejuvenation. It’s also the time when most people have forgotten about the resolutions and goals they set earlier in the year. Have you neglected or given up your goals? If you have, you are far from alone. Most people let their goals fall to the wayside at least by March, if not long before. It comes down to four simple reasons.

Setting goals is the easy part. A lot of people say they want to lose weight, eat better, learn a new skill, or try a new hobby, but they don’t define their goals any further. Vague goals aren’t really goals at all. The best way to stay on track is to be as specific as possible. Understand what you need to do to accomplish your goals. Make sure you have access to the appropriate resources that will help you make progress. Resources come in all forms. Look to the people around you for accountability — your family, friends, neighbors, or colleagues. If you don’t want to involve anyone else, keep a notebook or diary to track progress. Or if you are learning a new skill, such as a foreign language for a trip next year, the resource you need may be an app on your phone. When you bring specific goals together with the necessary resources, achieving your dreams becomes more possible than ever before. You just have to take steps to avoid falling into the mistakes listed above. Set attainable concrete goals, track your progress, and check in with someone to keep you accountable. Since it’s been a few months, take a moment to review how far you’ve come since January. What do you need to do to make 2018 your best year yet?

1. They set goals that were out of reach or unrealistic. 2. They had zero accountability. 3. They set abstract goals. 4. They didn’t track progress.

UP IN THE AIR THE LEGACY OF AMELIA EARHART There are plenty of figures worthy of remembrance during Women’s History Month. From literary pioneers like Mary Shelley and Emily Dickinson to civil rights heroes like Rosa Parks and Daisy Bates, inspiring legacies abound. But few of those women’s stories end with a question mark. To this day, the story of famed pilot and women’s rights advocate Amelia Earhart remains shrouded in the clouds. Her life was defined by a rare combination of curiosity, conviction, and courage. Earhart became a nurse during the Great War, taught aeronautical engineering at Purdue, and was an avid feminist in the post-suffrage era. On top of these accomplishments, Earhart became the famous aviator we remember today. Since her twin-engine Lockheed Electra disappeared over the Pacific Ocean during the last leg of her historic 1937 flight around the world, the Earhart legacy has been defined by mystery. For decades, historians and enthusiasts have batted around theories about the fate of the intrepid pilot. Just last summer, on the 80th anniversary of her disappearance, a History Channel documentary claimed to have found the truth.

The TV documentary “Amelia Earhart: The Lost Evidence” made a media splash when investigators claimed to have uncovered a photograph of Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, alive in the Marshall Islands. According to their narrative, Earhart and Noonan survived an emergency landing in the Japanese- occupied islands, only to languish as prisoners of war. Cold water was poured on this theory shortly after. A copy of the same photograph was found in the Japanese National Archives with the date 1935, which was two years too early for the photo’s subjects to be Earhart and Noonan. People’s enthusiasm to solve the mystery of Earhart’s disappearance will persist for years to come. But this month, as we celebrate the accomplishments of women throughout history, it’s important that we set aside the mystique of Earhart’s death to honor her vibrant life. She blazed a trail for women in science, aviation, and beyond, leaving a legacy as boundless as the sky.
