Hurry Hard to the St. Thomas Curling Club as They Teach Their Sport For many Canadians, curling is a familiar sight every winter. We watch it during the Olympics, cheer on our favourite teams at the Brier and Scotties, and marvel at the precision and strategy involved. Yet for many people, the thought of stepping onto the ice themselves can feel intimidating. The St. Thomas Curling Club is hoping to change that with its annual Learn to Curl program and upcoming Open Houses October 6-8th from 7 pm to 9 pm. The club is inviting anyone who has ever been curious about the sport to discover just how welcoming and accessible curling can be. According to Craig Carman, Board Member and originator of the Learn to Curl Program, the program was created to solve a common problem. “There were a lot of new members who had never been on the ice before,” Craig explains. “They learned through osmosis, depending on who happened to be teaching them. We needed a standardized program where someone could walk in off the street, complete the course, and be integrated onto any team.” Craig then designed the Learn to Curl program four years ago. Since then, it has introduced dozens of new curlers to the sport through a structured, six-week course that builds confidence one step at a time. Participants begin by learning the fundamentals of balance and delivering a rock before progressing to sweeping, strategy, scoring, etiquette and eventually playing full games with instructors offering guidance throughout.
“We teach everything from balance, how to slide, how to sweep, the different positions on the ice and how each shot affects the game,” Craig says. “By the end of the program they can be integrated onto any team, and that’s really the goal.” The course is designed for complete beginners. No previous experience is necessary, and participants only need clean indoor shoes and comfortable, warm clothing. The club supplies everything else, including brooms, sliders and other equipment.
