the club teaches stick curling as an alternative. “There really isn’t a fitness requirement,” says Ellen Luft, club President. “If someone can’t slide, we teach them to deliver the rock using a stick, so everyone has an opportunity to enjoy the game.” This year’s Learn to Curl program follows the club’s Open House, giving prospective curlers the chance to visit the facility, meet members and even step onto the ice before deciding whether to register. Taking over leadership of the program this season is Eric Miles, a new board member who is passionate about growing the sport. “I think it’s a great way to show people they don’t have to be intimidated,” Eric says. “It’s an opportunity to come out, learn the basics, build confidence and then decide whether you want to join a league.” Although Eric has only been curling for three years, he has followed the sport for decades and understands why so many people become lifelong curlers. “It’s a great way to get out of the house during those darker winter months,” he says. “We want people to become as excited about curling as we are.” That enthusiasm extends well beyond the ice. Curling has long been known as one of Canada’s most social sports, and the St. Thomas Curling Club proudly embraces that tradition. “The social aspect is equally as important for many of our members,” Eric says. “People love the camaraderie, spending time with teammates after games and getting to know other members.” After each game, it is customary for opponents to share a drink together, creating friendships that often last for years. Craig has seen firsthand how meaningful those connections can become. “We’ve had people join after losing a spouse because they were

looking for something to do,” he says. “One gentleman started curling for the first time at 83 years old, and now he’s curling three times a week.” The club is also investing in the future through its Little Rocks and Junior programs, introducing children as young as five to the sport in a fun, supportive environment complete with cookies, hot chocolate and plenty of encouragement. Whether you’re looking for a new winter hobby, a chance to stay active, or simply a welcoming community to be part of, the St. Thomas Curling Club hopes you’ll give curling a try. After all, every experienced curler once threw their very first rock.
