New partnership for conservation work gŏđŏ

FINCH | A regional conservation group has a «handshake»deal with one of the major power out"ts in Ontario to support expansion of habitat protection programs in the South Nation River watershed. O$cials for the South Nation Conserva- tion Authority (SNC) and Ontario Power Generation (OPG) have signed a three-year partnership agreement for expansion of “critical habitat” protection and enhance- ment programs dealing with woodland, grassland, and wetland areas in the South Nation watershed region. “SNC is pleased to be working with OPB,” said Karen Paquette, SNC spokeswoman, “to support conservation initiatives in the communities in which we operate.” The SNC is responsible for %ood control, conservation work, and habitat studies and enhancement projects in the South Nation River watershed, a 4200-square-kilometre region, including 15 municipalities within Eastern Ontario. OPG is one of the largest power compa- nies in North America and produces more than half the power used in most homes, businesses, schools, hospitals, and other fa- cilities in Ontario. During the next three years several of the existing SNC programs will see expansion, including the Woodlot Advisory Service which provides landowners in the region with management help for their woodlots. The partnership will also assist the SNC program for restoration of grassland habi-

tats in the region, to support native bird species such as the Eastern meadowlark, Loggerhead shrike, and the bobolink, and also provide pollen sources for both domes- tic and wild bee swarms. SNC sta" are work- ing with private landowners on this project with the goal of recreating more than 150 acres of grassland habitat. The SNC/OPG partnership will also aid with wetland enhancement projects to es- tablish riparian zones, cultivate wetland plants, and increase spawning opportuni- ties for !sh stocks. More support for the conservation agency’s monitoring pro- grams for wetland amphibians and reptiles will also help with an ongoing project for protection of existing and creation of new nesting sites for eight native turtle species in the watershed region. Seven of these turtle species are classi!ed as “at risk” in On- tario. “Another interesting strategy,” stated Pa- quette, “includes the installation of wood duck next boxes that will make wetlands more welcoming for wood ducks. Wild rice will also be sown throughout the water- shed, to increase cultural values and food sources for wildlife.” SNC’s community outreach and educa- tion programs will also bene!t from the partnership, including curriculum-linked hands-on presentations for youth on wood- land, wetland, and grassland habitats to foster greater appreciation among students for environmental science in the region.
