PAINTING, SINGING, AND … WINNING?
Jerry Finds More Business Tips in Art
Last month, I wrote to you about my 95/5 Creativity Rule, and it inspired me and my team to get creative! We stretched our artistic talent by painting together at the local futsol arena. We bought a bunch of painting supplies, watched an instructional YouTube video on the nearby TV, and started the fun but messy process of painting a waterfall scene. I’ll admit, it wasn’t perfect. We put the YouTube video on at quarter- speed and still had to pause it many times to keep up. But we had a great time duplicating the waterfall, flowering tree, rocks, and eddies on our canvases. One of our attorneys, Katlyn, is more advanced than the rest of us, so she painted her own landscape and a cluster of daisies. I think they turned out wonderfully. I, for one, left the arena feeling more like an artist than ever. It was a reassuring reminder that even amateurs can produce beautiful artwork! As my painter friend says, we all have artistic talent inside us that should be encouraged and pursued.
Choral music isn’t all I listen to, though. The musicians I really respect are the ones who put their hearts and souls into their music, like Buddy Guy, the Chickasaw Mudd Puppies, Shakey Graves, and Shovels & Rope. Even guys like AC/DC can tell a heartfelt story. They show up on stage as their true selves and tap into their genuine feelings. It’s something special to listen to a person who is so genuine and refuses to hold back. I think we can all learn a thing or two from these musicians. Many of us — myself included — create a persona and stick to it as we go through life. It’s a way of hiding ourselves. But these musicians drop the whole facade and show us who they really are. That’s something I strive to do every day, and it helps me succeed in my work. When you’re presenting to a court, judge, and jury, you can’t come across as a man full of bluster. You have to drop the facade and say, “Look, this is what’s really going on here.” Getting to the heart of the matter and giving the unvarnished truth is often the best path to victory in litigation. “MANY OF US — MYSELF INCLUDED — CREATE A PERSONA AND STICK TO IT AS WE GO THROUGH LIFE. IT’S A WAY OF HIDING OURSELVES. BUT THESE MUSICIANS DROP THE WHOLE FACADE AND SHOW US WHO THEY REALLY ARE.”
I think this lesson goes hand in hand with last month’s newsletter about the Creativity Rule. Embracing the artistic talent you were
told you didn’t have is one way of dropping your persona. This month, I’d encourage you to do both in your business practice. You might be surprised by the rewards you reap!
Painting is one of the most common examples of an artistic talent, but it’s far from the only one out there. One of my personal favorite forms of artistic expression is music. One of the greatest dreams of my life is to sing in the middle of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. I joined my local church choir about 10 years ago as a tenor, and singing in a group of other people is an amazing experience — as long as everyone is on key!

When It Rains, It Pours A Case Drenched in Disorder
Some people love the rain. After all, there’s something magical about thunder rolling through the clouds as lightning illuminates a multitude of raindrops. Yet, if the storm is too strong — or even dangerous to be in — people might not enjoy it at all. And that certainly appears to have been the case in 1996 when an Israeli woman in Haifa, Israel, sued a television station because of their incorrect weather report. The weather forecaster, Danny Rup, predicted that the day would be beautiful and sunny, but the weather had a mind of its own and ended up being rainy, dark, and gloomy. Because the woman relied upon the accuracy of the report, she left her home without a raincoat or an umbrella and got caught in the pouring rain. As the old wives’ tale goes, if you get caught in the rain, you’ll catch a cold. Well, the woman claimed that after being exposed to inclement weather, she caught the flu and subsequently was out of work for four days, had to visit the doctor, and spent $38 on medicine. Due to such a daunting experience, she also said that she suffered additional stress from the entire situation. The woman ended up taking Channel 2 news station to a small claims court where she sought financial compensation to cover her sickness and suffering — as well as an apology from the
forecaster who wrongly predicted the weather. The woman stated that weather forecasts are legally binding.
Many of us would see this as a frivolous lawsuit, but the TV station settled out of court and the woman received $1,000 for her pain and suffering and an apology from Danny Rup. Despite this case, most people take weather predictions from television and radio forecasters with a bit of skepticism thinking that forecasts are just a well-educated guess based on available resources — and it can change on a whim. It’s just the nature of it!

cases, a victim’s stalker is someone they know or were once in an intimate relationship with. While it’s always important to never engage with your stalker, you can take certain steps to protect your safety and well-being.
To keep yourself safe, what can be done? Of course, if you are ever in immediate danger or if someone has made a credible threat, you should call the police right away. Be sure to carry a charged cellphone with you at all times for this reason. If someone is following you, seek out the nearest safe place to go, whether it be a police station, fire station, public place, or a friend’s house. Always trust your instincts: If you feel like something is wrong, it likely is. If you feel like someone may be taking an unnatural interest in you, begin varying your routines and routes a bit. Be careful when posting on social media; don’t give out information about where you live, work, or enjoy hanging out. Lastly, try to avoid going places alone. Exercise with a friend if you can and walk to your car with a coworker after work. Stalking is a serious problem and many people assume that ignoring the behavior will take care of the issue. In most cases, that doesn’t happen. When people stalk other people, they violate boundaries in order to make
First and foremost, you must know the signs and tactics of stalking, which include:

• Leaving strange or potentially threatening items for the victim to find
• Watching, following, or tracking a victim
• Sneaking into the victim’s home or car and doing things to scare the victim or let them know the perpetrator had been there
their victims feel unsafe. If you ever fall victim to stalking, it’s paramount that you take the necessary steps to keep yourself safe as well as involve law enforcement.

3 Reasons You Need a Business Attorney
If you’re reading this article, you’re wondering how you can make money for your business by having a business attorney on your team. A lot of people look out into the world and think, “Well, attorneys are kind of a luxury item for wealthy businesses, and I’m not a wealthy business, so I can’t afford that luxury.” Other people look at it the other way around and say, “Well, wealthy businesses have attorneys. I want to be a wealthy business, so I’m going to get an attorney on board and find out how that can help out.” There are probably a hundred reasons why having an attorney on your team can make money for your business. I just want to focus on three of them. The first thing I want you to know is that if you have a business and you hire an attorney for that business, the money your business spends on the legal fees is a tax-deductible expense; that’s coming basically out of pre-tax dollars. Second, and this is my favorite, how do you think people treat your business and you as a business owner when they know you have a business attorney on your team? How do you treat other businesses when you know that they have an attorney on the team? Along the same line, what if you know that the other business not only has an attorney on the team, but they also meet with that attorney regularly and discuss business strategy, pending items, and things that they’re looking for in the future? I bet you’ll give that business an extra level of respect and play
it straight with them. And so, I invite you to think about how that will work for you if people you do business with know that you run everything past your attorney. The third thing I hope you will think about is that having an attorney on your team can help you spot risks you may not have been aware of and solve them for pennies rather than thousands of dollars. The issues an attorney can help spot early on, while there’s an easy and available solution, are worth gold to you — as opposed to getting into a problem down the road and possibly even getting sued or having an employee dispute that will cost tens of thousands of dollars to resolve, if not more. So, I encourage you to consider these three things. It’s tax deductible anyway, you’ll get oodles more respect for your business if people know you’re consulting with a business attorney regularly, and your attorney will help you to spot risks and resolve them before they become a problem for your business. If you have any other questions about what it would mean for your business to have an attorney on the team, give us a call.

How to Handle a Stalker
4
Is Somebody Watching You?
When many think of stalking, the common image is likely a stranger prowling around in the shadows of the night, showing up at random places uninvited, or spying on victims from afar. However, stalking can potentially involve so much more. Stalking is menacing behavior that makes victims feel unsafe and can lead to some terrifying acts. Stalking is more common than you may think: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1 in every 6 women and 1 in every 17 men have reported experiencing stalking at some point in their lives. For women, roughly 54% experienced it before the age of 25, and for men, 41%. Research conducted by the CDC revealed that stalking can damage its victims, leading to potential depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. It’s reported that roughly 68% of female and 70% of male victims received threats of physical harm in connection with stalking at some point in their lives.
