Keystruct Construction, Inc. erects BUTLER Building for newHale Field House inMercersburg, Pennsylvania

Mercersburg, PA — Mercersburg Academy is an in- dependent college-preparatory school with over 80 percent of their students participating in athletic activities, so quality sports facilities are very im- portant to the campus life. Pro- viding safe, modern facilities for the indoor track and field team, as well as practice spaces for additional teams during inclement weather, prompted Mercersburg to construct the new Hale Field House on their campus. Keystruct Construction, Inc. provided services to furnish, deliver and erect a new 62,000 s/f BUTLER building, with a clear span of 180-feet. Because the new field house connects to the existing athletic center, it was important for the new building to complement the character of the surrounding structures. The new facility features Butlerib II Wall Pan- els with brick, and the MR 24-Roof System in a custom color to match the adjacent buildings, creating a cohesive feel for the entire athletic cen- ter complex. Several special features were incorporated in the new field house, to make sure it would

successfully meet the needs of the end users. The architect specified an impact-resistant lacrosse wall, which required adapted bracing. Basketball back stops and divider cur- tains necessitated a compli- cated support system to ensure structural integrity for the equipment. The building also features drop-down practice cages, which required adjust- ments to the normal bracing

systems. Keystruct worked with the BUTLER engineering team to ensure the structural systems in the building would fully support the specialized equipment needs. The completed facility of- ficially opened in January 2017. The field house features a 200-meter track with six turn lanes and eight sprint lanes. The track infield area accom- modates four regulation tennis

courts and basketball courts. In addition to the track and field events, tennis matches, and basketball games, the new building will provide practice and workout space for a va- riety of sports. The building features a drop-down tunnel cage for baseball, softball, and golf practice, as well as the spe- cially designed lacrosse wall. The facility can be utilized by any sport for practice or events.

The new facility received an Honorable Mention in the 2017 BUTLER Design Awards competition for innovative de- sign. The addition of Hale Field House allows the student- athletes to practice and play in a safer environment that is not impacted by inclement weather, and provides enrich- ment to the campus life at Mer- cersburg Academy for future generations. n
