for the past 10 years after a promoter came around where he worked. “They were asking people to give blood,” he said. “It’s good for your own health and it also helps people.” Pierre Daoust of L’Orignal has been a blood donor for 30 years. “I’m a nurse,” he said, smiling. “So I felt it was part of my work. Now I’m retired, but it is part of my life. Most of the regulars at the Vankleek Hill blood donor clinic have different reasons for why they became blood donors. But they have the same answer for why they continue to donate blood year after year: because it is the right thing to do. Luc S éguin consults his smartphone while waiting for the blood bag hooked up to his arm to finish filling. The Hawkesbury resident has been a regular visitor to the Canadian Blood Services donor clinics for five years, making the trip to Vankleek Hill or wherever the clinic is held at least once every 60 days. “I had too much iron in my blood and I needed to get rid of it,” Séguin said, explain- ing why he first attended a blood donor
At 74, Shirley Duncan of Vankleek Hill is one of the older members of the blood donor club. A very special member because her blood type is O-negative, the rare “universal donor” type good for anyone who belongs to one of the other blood groups. She began donating blood when she was a 17-year-old university student. “I was training to be a teacher,” she re- called, adding she and her friends all do- nated blood on a regular basis back then. “It was a good thing to do. My friends and I, most of us knew that it was important.” SylvainDesRosiers, another Hawkesbury resident making the trip over to Vankleek Hill for the Nov. 30 blood donor clinic, has been giving his “gift of life” on a regular basis
