The current CIP report that Hawkesbury council will review later this month has the downtown portion of Main Street covered by COMZAC/BIA as one of its initial priori- ties. Bogue and Clifford Assaly, COMZAC/ BIA secretary, report that the feedback they have had so far fromgroupmembers about the CIP is positive, but they would likemore detailed information about specific parts of the CIP. “What we’re wondering is how much money the town will be investing in it?” said Assaly about the CIP. “We’re not getting any figures on that,” said Bogue. Both noted that the CIP could address five key issues for local merchants and professionals based in the COMZAC/BIA. Those are signage, lighting, awnings, façade improvements, and accessibility needs for people in wheelchairs or who have other mobility problems.

Hawkesbury’s downtownmerchants want to knowhowmuch support money City Hall will provide to helpmake the Community Improvement Plan (CIP) work. “It’s a great thing,” said Lawrence Bogue, president of the Commission de la Zone d’amélioration commerciale/Business Im- provement Area (COMZAC/BIA). “But we have a lot of questions.” Hawkesbury planning staff and a con- sultant firm have been working on the CIP for the past year. The final version is due for presentation to Hawkesbury council before the Christmas break. The CIP outlines ways for the town to assist with revitalizing local business ar- eas and some residential neighborhoods. Other municipalities have CIPs that provide limited-amount grants or property tax ad- justments. This financial assistance helps local businesses deal with various issues ranging from specific façade improvements to exterior design advisory as well as reviews of zoning and other regulations. Many CIPs include heritage support and preservation programs to assist both business owners and homeowners who have historic buildings.
