years, first as a councillor for the village be- fore it was amalgamated with L’Orignal and other smaller communities into the present Champlain Township, and then continuing as a councillor for the village ward since then. He is carrying a family tradition of involvement in local political concerns as his grandfather, Antoine Duval, had sat on Vankleek Hill village council before him. “He said, ‘When I quit, I want you to go on,’” said Duval. Earlier this year Duval started thinking about making another try at being mayor now that the current incumbent, Gary Bar- ton, has indicated he may not run for re- election. “I’ve always been interested in what went on in Vankleek Hill and around,” he said. “The biggest thing is our infrastructure. Especially now that Ontario is cutting back on the grants. We do have a plan on where to do the roadwork over the next five years.” Overall, he thinks the township is in good shape, both with finances and also services and structures. He expects to start campaigning soon in the new year, while waiting for the official May window for submitting his nomination papers for the mayor’s position.
