KINESIO TAPING

Kinesio Tape® is the original elastic adhesive tape. Dr. Kenzo Kase developed this tape in 1979. Kinesio Tape is latex-free and utilized as a 24-hour treatment. KinesioTaping became a public trend following our most recent summer Olympic games. Many athletes had a variety of colors covering their bodies for support or injury prevention. Although, 85% of applications are for non-athletes. Kinesio Taping can be utilized to inhibit or hinder a muscle as well as facilitate the muscle. The application of the tape determines the effect on the muscle. There are times a muscle needs assistance and the therapist can apply the tape to facilitate the muscle to contract. In an opposite effect, if a muscle is overworking, the tape can be applied to inhibit the muscle. Many options allow for a basic “I” strip to be utilized but can be changed into “X” or “Y” strips to alter the effect. The application has endlesspossibilitiesbasedon theapplicationshape, direction, and tension. Many therapists utilize taping to supplement treatment within the clinic. Taping can be a 24-hour/day treatment as long as the tape is intact. For example, the tape can assist with reducing inflammation or increasing circulation within an area. The Kinesio Taping® Method can be utilized

at all ages, from pediatrics to geriatrics as well as all patient types or populations. Applications can be used within the orthopedic setting as well as lymphedema treatments, neuromuscular, or generalized post- operative treatments. - Lauren Bunten PT, DPT
