ISRI Hosts 2020 State Of Recycling Briefing Address The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) joined by the U.S. Senate Recycling Caucus hosted the annual State of Recycling Briefing.Held virtually this year, the State of Re- cycling Briefing annually coincides with America Recycles Day, which takes place every November 15. “While the factors surrounding COVID-19 put enormous pressures on recycling, it also triggered an awakening of the importance of recycling as that first link in the manu- facturing supply chain,” said ISRI President Robin Wiener. “During the initial stages of the COVID-19 health pandem- ic, the Department of Homeland Security Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency deemed manufactur- ing and its supply chain, including recycling, essential. The Federal Government – with most states following – quickly recognized that the supply of recyclable ferrous and nonferrous metals, paper, plastics, electronics, glass and rubber needed in critical manufacturing are essential, enabling recycling facilities to continue operating through the pandemic. All told, recycling operations are an essen- tial part of critical manufacturers’ supply chain, supplying 40 percent (on average across all commodities) of their raw material needs.” Recycling Is Essential The event featured opening remarks from Senate Recy- cling Caucus Co-Chairs SenatorTom Carper (D-DE) and Sen- ator John Boozman (R-AR), as well as House Recycling Cau- cus Co-Chair Congressman John Shimkus (R-IL).Additional panelists included: Julie Alsup, Senior Manager, Government Relations, International Paper;Chris Bedell, SeniorVice Pres- ident & General Counsel,The David J. Joseph Company; and Curt Wells, Senior Director, Regulatory Affairs, The Alumi- numAssociation. “Simple, yet effective education is needed to raise aware- ness among consumers of the importance of recycling and its essential role in manufacturing,” continuedWiener. During the briefing, ISRI also released its latest video “Re- cycling Is Essential,”which highlights the critically essential role of recycling in the creation of new products, goods or other materials used in everyday life. WasteExpo Moves 2021 Date; AF&PA Paper Event Canceled The organizer of WasteExpo has moved back the 2021 edition of that event, while the organizer of Paper2021 has canceled that March get-together as COVID-19 continues to take a toll on in-person events for the waste and recycling industries heading into 2021. TheAmerican Forest & PaperAssociation (AF&PA) and the National Paper Trade Association (NPTA) have announced that Paper2021,which had been scheduled for March 14-16 in Atlanta, Georgia, has now been canceled. The organizer of WasteExpo, one of the largest events held annually for the waste and recycling industry, has an- nounced a delay in its 2021 event rather than a cancellation.
