Managing The Tide Of E-Waste

Containerboard Production Soars

The American Forest & Paper Associa- tion’s (AF&PA’s) October 2020 Contain- erboard Monthly report stated that total containerboard production for the month increased 3 percent compared with Oc- tober 2019, and production was up 4 per- cent for the first 10 months of this year compared with the first 10 months of 2019. AF&PA’s report stated that October production of containerboard for export decreased 13 percent compared with the same month last year, but it was up 15 percent year to date. In October, the containerboard operating rate was at 98.1 percent, up 3.6 percent from October 2019 and up 2.8 percent year to date. Inventories AF&PA says mill inventories of contain- erboard at the end of October decreased 6,000 tons from the previous month and were up 42,000 tons compared with Oc- tober 2019. According to AF&PA’s October 2020 Boxboard Monthly report, total boxboard production in October decreased 2 per- cent compared with October 2019, and it was down 3 percent in the first 10 months of the year compared with the first 10 months of 2019. AF&PA reports

by Greg Kishbaugh T he COVID-19 pandemic has affected every facet of society, and the varied companies associated with recycling in its many forms have certainly not been immune. A new report from Blancco Technology Group called The Rising Tide of E-waste highlights both the e-waste and sustainability challenges and opportunities that the COVID-19 pandemic has created.

Views on statements: Completely Agree and Agree

We must take a serious view on ensuring all devices used to equip the workplace throughout the COVID-19 pandemic are appropriately stored and disposed of

To save costs, our organization will be more likely to return devices for reuse rather than buying new in the future

COVID-19 caused unnecessary short-term investment in technology, which will leave us at risk with data being stored on a wide range of devices

The report reveals that nearly half (47 percent) of companies effected by e-waste created new roles in their organization responsible for im- plementing and ensuring compliance with e-waste policies specifically to deal with e-waste issues generated from the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 53 million metric tons of e-waste was produced in 2019.As employees increasingly shifted to working at home, data security and e-waste concerns have risen as companies own more and more elec- tronic devices, all of which store immeasurably larger volumes of data. According to the report almost every company (97 percent) had

to purchase new laptops (75 percent of which were brand new) as their employees moved from traditional offices to home offices.Nearly 4 out of 5 respondents (78 percent) said that the short-term investment in technology would lead to security risks as data is stored on a wider range of devices. Companies that fail to address and use appropriate meth- ods of data sanitization when all the recently purchased de- vices are eventually decommissioned, run the risk of data breaches and regulatory penalties. The report found that 44 percent of companies currently have an e-waste policy in place for end-of-life device man- agement, but the plan was not yet being communicated or implemented. “The flood of technology investment which followed the beginning of the pandemic has created clear issues for both e-waste and secure data management,” said Alan Bentley, President of Global Strategy at Blancco.“The switch to re- mote work spurred on a wave of new device purchases, but these new, widely distributed devices have left enterprises feeling vulnerable. It’s fascinating that so many businesses have implemented roles to manage the e-waste issue result- ing from COVID-19, demonstrating corporate social respon- sibility (CSR), but also their concern around how these de- vices will be dealt with when they reach end-of-life.” A conclusion of the report is that a wide swath of com- panies could benefit from rethinking their device manage- ment practices. Key global findings from the report, include: • 92 percent of enterprises agree with the statement,“We must take a serious view on ensuring all devices used to equip the workforce throughout the COVID-19 pandemic are appropriately stored and disposed of.” • 47 percent of enterprises are “uncertain” about how best to communicate e-waste policies. This challenge is ex- acerbated by the fact that the task of being responsible for e-waste and CSR policy communications lacks ownership. Indeed, 39 percent of respondents said the reason their e-waste policies hadn’t been communicated was because no one had taken control of them. • 35 percent of enterprises said their organizations car- ried out physical destruction on end-of-life equipment be- cause it’s viewed as better for the environment. •When asked what will happen to their newly purchased devices when no longer required for remote work, 28 per- cent of enterprises said laptops would be erased to be resold. A further 27 percent said they would be erased to be reused internally. An additional 12 percent said they would be erased and recycled, and 9 percent will send them to an ITAD. Nominations Open For NWRA Hall Of Fame’s Class Of 2021 The National Waste & Recycling Association (NWRA) is now accepting nominations for its Hall of Fame’s Class of 2021. Hall of Fame inductees are selected from among NWRA members who are industry visionaries and icons who have created enduring legacies through their inspira- tional leadership, core values and significant contributions over the course of their careers.

Report: Colorado Falls Short In Recycling

A new report co-authored by Boulder, Colorado-based Eco-Cycle and Denver-based CoPIRG reveals that Colorado’s recycling rate dropped from 17.2 percent in 2018 to 15.9 percent in 2019,which is less than half the national average of 35 percent. The report, the State of Recycling and Composting in Col- orado also shows that Coloradans sent 6.1 million tons of municipal waste to landfills, more than 90 percent of which could have been recycled or composted to the benefit of the climate and the local economy. Despite the downward trend, the report also featured updated city-by-city recycling rates and held up the cities of Boulder, Loveland, Aspen, Durango and Fort Collins as leaders. Keeping Pace The new report highlights that Colorado is not on pace to meet its goal of diverting 28 percent of waste away from the landfill by 2021. Eco-Cycle and CoPIRG note that efforts for improvement should be focused on the Front Range communities in the south-central part of the state, which collectively produce about 87 percent of the total waste in the state. Notably, Front Range residents produce more than 475 ex- tra pounds of waste per person every year compared with residents living in the greater Colorado area.

Stadler Sorting Plant Starts In Mexico

Buyer’s Guide BALERS (HORIZONTAL)

Operadora de Ferrocarril y Manejo de Rellenos (OFMRS), Morelos,Mexico, has partnered with Germany-based Stadler to develop a municipal solid waste (MSW) plant in the city of Cuautla in Morelos. The plant will manage comprehensive waste treatment for 16 municipalities in Morelos and a small part of Mexico City. Highly Automated Some points that reportedly set OFMRS apart from other businesses are its high degree of automation, and its ability to sort by type of polymer and color and its management model. With facilities spanning 3,800 square meters (or about 41,000 square feet) and providing a maximum output of 640 to 700 metric tons per day,OFMRS sorts, classifies, com- pacts and commercializes MSW, recovering materials includ- ing cardboard, paper, carton packaging, plastic, glass, ferrous and nonferrous materials. Biogas is also recovered from organic waste and is fed to two Guascorde 1-megawatt power generators with a pow- er output of 2 megawatts.According to Stadler, that energy generated is supplied to two companies in the state through the power supply network owned by state-owned power utility CFE. The plant’s automated closed-loop system has 10 ma- chines and 35 recirculating conveyor belts.

Roth CH To Acquire PureCycle Technologies

Buyer’s Guide BALERS (HORIZONTAL) * RECYCLING EQUIPMENT CORPORATION * 831 W. 5th St. • Lansdale, PA 19446 (267) 218-7200

PureCycle Technologies LLC, Orlando, Florida, and Roth CH Acquisition, an acquisition company backed by Roth Capital Partners and Craig-Hallum Capital Group, have en- tered into a merger agreement. The companies aim to complete the merger of PureCycle into Roth CH’s portfolio by the first quarter of 2021. After the transaction closes, a parent company of PureCycle will issue an initial public offering (IPO). Upon closing, the cre- ated holding company will be renamed PureCycle Technol- ogies Inc. and will be listed on the Nasdaq Capital Market under the new ticker symbol PCT. Roth CH Acquisition also has entered into definitive pur- chase agreements for a $250 million common stock PIPE transaction, which is also expected to close in the first quar- ter of 2021. PureCycle Technologies has a license to com- mercialize solvent-based recycling purification technology for restoring polypropylene (PP) scrap into virgin-like resin. The company’s recycling process was developed by Procter & Gamble and commercialized by PureCycle. The company said its ultra-pure recycled polypropylene (UPRP) has simi- lar properties to virgin PP. The company is building its first commercial-scale plant in Ironton, Ohio, which is expected to have 107 million pounds of capacity per year when it’s fully operational. Pro- duction in Ironton is expected to start in late 2022,with full capacity expected to be achieved by 2023. Additionally, PureCycle reports that it plans to build new recycling production facilities globally, with the goal of having 30 commercial lines operational by 2030 and 50 by 2035.The company said it expects to announce its next location in Europe and to begin production in 2023 with a nameplate capacity of about 107 million pounds when fully operational.Additional expansion in the United States is expected to include five scaled-up commercial lines capa- ble of producing more than 165 million pounds each of its UPRP. PureCycle says it expects that production from the Ironton, Europe and other sites will bring more than 1.2 billion pounds of annual recycled PP to the market in the next five years. Keurig Dr Pepper, which has headquarters in Burling- ton, Massachusetts, and Plano, Texas, has announced that its Snapple and Core brands are transitioning to bottles made of 100-percent-recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET).This transition will reportedly eliminate about 46.3 million pounds of virgin plastic the company uses annual- ly. The company reports that Snapple is now available in 100-percent-recycled plastic 16-ounce bottles inWest Coast markets and said it will continue to roll out the new bot- tles in phases across the United States through early next year. With production underway, Core bottles made from 100-percent-recycled plastic will be on shelves beginning in early 2021, Keurig Dr Pepper said. Keurig Dr Pepper Brands To Use 100 Percent rPET

ISRI Hosts 2020 State Of Recycling Briefing Address The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) joined by the U.S. Senate Recycling Caucus hosted the annual State of Recycling Briefing.Held virtually this year, the State of Re- cycling Briefing annually coincides with America Recycles Day, which takes place every November 15. “While the factors surrounding COVID-19 put enormous pressures on recycling, it also triggered an awakening of the importance of recycling as that first link in the manu- facturing supply chain,” said ISRI President Robin Wiener. “During the initial stages of the COVID-19 health pandem- ic, the Department of Homeland Security Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency deemed manufactur- ing and its supply chain, including recycling, essential. The Federal Government – with most states following – quickly recognized that the supply of recyclable ferrous and nonferrous metals, paper, plastics, electronics, glass and rubber needed in critical manufacturing are essential, enabling recycling facilities to continue operating through the pandemic. All told, recycling operations are an essen- tial part of critical manufacturers’ supply chain, supplying 40 percent (on average across all commodities) of their raw material needs.” Recycling Is Essential The event featured opening remarks from Senate Recy- cling Caucus Co-Chairs SenatorTom Carper (D-DE) and Sen- ator John Boozman (R-AR), as well as House Recycling Cau- cus Co-Chair Congressman John Shimkus (R-IL).Additional panelists included: Julie Alsup, Senior Manager, Government Relations, International Paper;Chris Bedell, SeniorVice Pres- ident & General Counsel,The David J. Joseph Company; and Curt Wells, Senior Director, Regulatory Affairs, The Alumi- numAssociation. “Simple, yet effective education is needed to raise aware- ness among consumers of the importance of recycling and its essential role in manufacturing,” continuedWiener. During the briefing, ISRI also released its latest video “Re- cycling Is Essential,”which highlights the critically essential role of recycling in the creation of new products, goods or other materials used in everyday life. WasteExpo Moves 2021 Date; AF&PA Paper Event Canceled The organizer of WasteExpo has moved back the 2021 edition of that event, while the organizer of Paper2021 has canceled that March get-together as COVID-19 continues to take a toll on in-person events for the waste and recycling industries heading into 2021. TheAmerican Forest & PaperAssociation (AF&PA) and the National Paper Trade Association (NPTA) have announced that Paper2021,which had been scheduled for March 14-16 in Atlanta, Georgia, has now been canceled. The organizer of WasteExpo, one of the largest events held annually for the waste and recycling industry, has an- nounced a delay in its 2021 event rather than a cancellation.
