Students at local high schools cheered the end of school and the start of summer vaca- tion. For Grade 12 students, the end of June featured their own graduation celebrations. Throughout Prescott-Russell, another sort of graduation took place earlier this spring as the Prescott-Russell Coalition in Action to Prevent and Stop Bullying (PRCAPSB) marked the successful conclusion to its community action plan to help create bully-free zones and spread the message to Stamp Out Bul- lying throughout the region. Brian Smockum and Luke Brodie of the Canadian Red Cross hosted workshops in Rockland, Casselman and Hawkesbury during the first half of May. The workshops, titled Ten Steps to Creat- ing Safe Environments , helped participants representing local businesses, recreation centres, community clubs, sports teams and other agencies to evaluate any and all risks within their organizations or localities, define a common vocabulary about what bullying is, and determine the next steps towards creating a bully-free community. More than 80 participants attended the workshops, united by the wish to see bullying eliminated in their communities. The Coalition is now looking into other strategies to continue towards its goal. L’homme de 73 ans accusé d’avoir attaché son chien à l’arrière de sa camionnette en 2014 a plaidé coupable aux accusations de cruauté animale portées contre lui. Adrien Paquette a comparu en cour, le 22 juin dernier, où il a plaidé coupable aux différentes accusations qui pesaient contre lui, soit pour avoir inutilement provoqué des souffrances à son chien, pour lui avoir causé des blessures et pour avoir proféré des me- naces aux personnes qui sont intervenues. Adrien Paquette avait décidé de punir son chien qui s’était enfui en l’attachant et en le tirant sur près d’un demi-kilomètre avec sa camionnette, en mars 2014. Des témoins avaient contacté les agents du Société pro- tectrice des animaux d’Ottawa après avoir aperçu le camion qui trainait le chien. Tyson, un berger allemand de deux ans, s’était retrouvé avec plusieurs coupures et égratignures aux pattes et au museau. M. Paquette doit repasser en cour le 2 septembre prochain pour y recevoir sa sentence. Le cas a été reporté à la suite des demandes de la Couronne et de la Défense. Ces derniers ont demandé à avoir plus de temps pour examiner un rapport préalable à la sentence. L’accusé pourrait faire face à la prison alors que, dans les cas de cruauté animale, une peine de deux ans peut être demandée.
