ROYAL PARK PLACE

Life at Royal Park Place A Message from Jeff : Fowl Language IV

watching us very closely as he pages through his cookbook. Thus, if you care for us, please refrain from leaving donuts, muffins, and other left over “people treats.” Some of us who are void of willpower have been told by our ducktors that our cholesterol is much too high. We all have been placed on the following dietary restrictions: white bread (not stale) broken into small bite- size morsels (no peanut butter or jelly) or whole kernel corn and bird pellets. We love it when you and your grandchildren feed us. Although we can’t understand a single word you’re saying to us, we try to quack back politely (Perhaps you should try quacking loudly and flapping your wings.). Anyway, when you do feed us, please throw the food on the pond side of the sidewalk or on the Royal Park Drive side of the pond. Please do not throw food from the second floor balconies. We do appreciate the “manna from heaven” lesson, but would prefer to eat in, or near, the water. Obviously, we have no pockets, and are forced to eat where we are fed. As those of you who live on the first floor already know, if we are fed near the building or on someone’s patio, we often have difficulty making it to the appropriate restroom facilities. Finally, we realize that it must be costly to feed us all year long, so please, put it on our bills. The Ducks

Last spring I had a nice talk with the ducks, and they voiced some concerns that they had. This year, the entire group is so busy chasing each other around, they sent me a letter instead and asked that I pass it on to you. The letter you see below is what I received from them just yesterday, minus the fowl language that I felt obligated to remove: Dear Royal Park Place Neighbors, Thank you so much for all of the attention you have been giving us. It is your kindness that helps us tolerate the long winters. As your neighbors we feel it is important to express our concerns to you before there is a crisis. The fact is, unless we change our eating habits, we will not fit into our feathers next fall. Even worse, Cris Barajas in the kitchen has been

At the Table with Cris April 1st is National Sourdough Bread Day! As part of the California

Gold Rush, sourdough was the principal bread made in Northern California and is still a part of the culture of San Francisco today. The bread was so common at that time that the word “sourdough” became a nickname for the gold prospectors. In The Yukon and Alaska, a “sourdough” is also a nickname given to someone who has spent an entire winter north of the Arctic Circle. It refers to their tradition of protecting their sourdough during the coldest months by keeping it close to their body. The sourdough tradition was also carried into Alaska and western Canadian territories during the Klondike Gold Rush.

Thursday, April 25th at 7:00 p.m. The Holland Community Theatre presents this beloved story of aging, family, and forgiveness. This is the love story of Ethel and Norman Thayer, returning to their summer home on Golden Pond for their forty-eighth year. Norman, a retired professor nearing eighty, maintains his wit despite health issues, while Ethel, ten years younger, complements him with her appreciation for life's simple pleasures. Their daughter and her fiancé visit, then leave for Europe, entrusting the fiancé's teenage son to Norman and Ethel. The boy becomes the grandchild they've longed for, teaching them about modern teenage life. As summer fades, a mild heart attack brings Norman and Ethel closer. Despite time's passage, their bond remains strong, hinting at the possibility of another summer on Golden Pond. Ticket prices will vary depending on if we have enough for a group rate but are listed between $17.00 per person. Please sign up at the table outside of the activity room as soon as possible.

Chaplain’s Corner

You are not alone in your journey…God is continually walking with you every step of the way. Jesus was “a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief.” (Isaiah. 53:13) We indeed serve a Savior who understands. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted, and He saves those whose spirits have been crushed. (Psalm.34:18) y God draws you close to Himself. He is not standing on the sidelines. y He gives you this Royal Park Community for support. y He gives you the Hope of Heaven as you grieve. y “I don’t know how you go through losing someone without your faith to carry you.” Others share this about their Griefshare experience: y “This class made me realize that there are steps and phases we go through in grief…some good days and bad. It was comforting to be with others on a similar journey, sharing their perspectives and experiences. This class helped me move forward.” —Sue (lost son to suicide) y “This class helped me to see that the feelings I’ve gone through this past year are normal and gave me the confidence to know I am on the right track as I continue to move through the grief process.” —Nancy (lost her husband) Let us walk together through grief toward healing and hope, and yes, even joy for the future. Facilitated by: Chaplain Doug, Chaplain Mary, and Harley VerBeek .

Thursdays, April 18 – May 23 3:00–4:00 pm Royal Atrium Activity Room Sign-Up sheet at the RPP main desk or at either RAI dining room. After the funeral, when the cards and flowers have stopped coming, most of the people around you return to their normal lives. But your grief continues, and you often feel alone. We invite you to join GriefShare as we continue to walk alongside each other through one of life’s

most difficult experiences. The purpose of GriefShare:

y To provide a safe, supportive environment in which people can come together to share concerns related to their loss and grief. y To help facilitate healthy ways of coping with loss and grief. During these 6 sessions we listen to others (video experts and testimonies); we listen to each other (through group discussion); and we listen to God (guided by scriptures and weekly workbook).

Let’s Stay Fit this Spring!!

Arthritis Ability Wednesdays at 10am

This seated class will help hold arthritis at bay through education, exercise, and lifestyle management. Improve stamina, joint mobility, and overall function with the goal of decreasing pain. Joint range of motion exercises will help increase flexibility and endurance. Resistance bands may be used.

Cardio & Cognition with the Rise Therapy team Fridays at 10am

Even if exercise has never appealed to you before, please check out one of our classes this April! We encourage you to keep checking out these new classes! Carrie will continue leading Sit & Stretch on Tuesdays and Game Fitness on Thursdays at 9am!

Cardio helps even if you have memory issues It’s never too late to adopt brain-protecting exercise, even if you show early signs of memory loss. A study published online March 23, 2021, by the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease looked at how cardio exercise affects people with early cognitive decline. Those who followed a yearlong moderate-to-vigorous cardio program scored better on cognitive tests than those who only did a stretching routine. Specifically, they improved their executive function skills, which involve planning and decision making. Most exercisers did brisk walking, but others did swimming, cycling, or ballroom dancing. They followed a 30-minute, three-day-a-week routine for six months and then increased it to five workouts per week.

Balance and Core Boosters Mondays at 10am

This entry-level class is designed to improve balance through better body awareness, posture, and lower body strength. We will also strengthen the muscles in the body’s trunk to help hips, abdomen, and pelvis support your spine, improve your balance and stability, and maintain your stamina. Seated and standing exercises target specific core muscles to improve posture and function. Gain confidence for daily living as well through drills and movements designed to safely improve overall mobility and movement to prevent injuries and reduce the risk of falls.

Royal Park Place Announcements A Message from Kimberly Please do not forget to check your mailbox

Sunday Evening Worship Service The newly appointed worship committee is suggesting some changes for our worship. This month, we will begin our service with a call to worship by the pastor. This will be followed by meditation music designed to take us into the presence of God, allowing each of us time to prepare our hearts for worship. The other change will be replacing the bulletin with this monthly newsletter to communicate with you. We will list the pastors for the month, give a brief financial report, and share any other information that we think will be helpful. Please let us know what you think. Share your comments with any member of the Worship Committee: Ellie Aubel, Chair ; Lloyd Huls, Vice Chair ; Shirley Klingenberg, Treasurer ; Norma Boersen, Secretary ; Hazel Kuyper, and Rainie Slagh, Voting Members ; Harley VerBeek, Worship Service Planner ; and Joe Aubel, Sound Technician; Ex officio members .

daily for mail. Many of the mailboxes get filled up quickly when not emptied consistently. If mailboxes get too packed with mail, the postman finds it very difficult to deliver mail sufficiently to our community. Thank you kindly. Helping Hands Group Our helping hands group will meet once a month to start and participate in a variety of volunteer opportunities. Give & Take This month, we will once again be having our all day Give & Take! This is your chance to bring all of the items you haven’t used in the past year and want to pass on to the next person, and to try new items that others might be passing on!
