October Fun Facts 1. Spreading Happiness and Kindness. World Smile Day is observed on the first Friday of every October, encouraging people to spread happiness by smiling and performing small acts of kindness. It is an excellent opportunity to spread positivity and joy to those around you and make the world a happier place 2. A month of bounty. October is known as the best harvesting month for many crops including apples, carrots, corn, grapes, onions, potatoes and squash. Oh, and obviously pumpkins too! 3. That's a lot of pumpkins! More than 50% of the US population purchases pumpkins during this month. The October pumpkin industry generates $708 million in sales each year. 4. The World Series. Major League Baseball’s World Series, which commences annually in October, has been a long-standing tradition since its inception on October 1st, 1903. The Boston Americans emerged victorious against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the inaugural World Series.

be in West Michigan. Thousands of people make their way to Grand Rapids to experience “ArtPrize” and vote for their favorite. With close to 1000 entries on display, the talent and variety of artistic expression is tremendous. But ArtPrize isn’t the only place to experience artistic creativity and beauty. Each fall vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows splash on hillsides and fields while a bright blue sky provides the perfect background. Each year I’m reminded, “God really wins the art prize every day!” His masterpiece - every flower, every mountain, every person is a creative expression of a loving, artistic God. I wondered how many people miss the ultimate art show on their way to ArtPrize. Perhaps next year I’ll hang an empty picture frame in front of a tree or flower in Grand Rapids and label it “God’s Entry”. Or better yet, a mirror! Take time today, to thank God for His creation and the billions of masterpieces he has created, including you!

Chaplain’s Corner

A number of months ago, I heard a pastor share that the origin of the word “re-member” is related to the word “dis-member”. When something is dis-membered, it is torn apart usually with great pain, much like the pain and grief we feel when a loved one dies, especially prematurely, at least to our limited understanding. But when we join together in community and share stories and shed tears about our loved ones, our hearts begin to mend and what was dis-membered begins to be re-membered. This is what we hoped would be the result of the Remembrance Run and based on the smiles, laughter, hugs and tears we observed and experienced, I believe that purpose was accomplished. As I re-engage as one of the chaplains at Royal Atrium Inn and Royal Park Place, it is my hope that we’ll do lots of re-membering together as well. Many things in our world and in our lives may feel broken and dis-membered but as we journey together, we find healing and hope. Jesus reminded his followers often of the importance of remembering and his words about remembrance remind us to do the same. I look forward to doing this with all of you! —Chaplain Cindy

I thank my God every time I remember you. Philippians 1:3 On Saturday, September 14, my family hosted a Remembrance Run in memory of my son Ben, who passed away at the age of 36 on February 10, 2024 after bravely battling cancer for four years. Around 75 people ran or walked in remembrance of loved ones who have passed away, or who they are praying for right now for any number of reasons. It was a wonderful though bittersweet time of reflection AND perspiration due to the 90 degree heat in mid-September!

Sunday Evening Worship

At the beginning of September, we were able to bless The Bridge, Harvest Stand, and Parkview Home with a gift of $100 each. Since September has five Sundays, we’ll most likely be able to also share with Compassion Heart in October. Our average giving during the past three months has been $172 per Sunday. We pay the pastors $75 and the pianists $25. Last month we shared a thank you note from Parkview Home. This month we’ll share what Compassionate Heart wrote: “Thank you so much for the kind and generous gift from Royal Park! We are so grateful for the loving support! You are awesome neighbors! Blessings.” In addition to our monetary gifts for Harvest Stand Ministries, we’re planning a food drive in November to help those in our community in need of food for Thanksgiving. We will be collecting food on November 10 at our evening worship service. This is purely voluntary. The choir has begun rehearsals. New voices are welcome and needed. Please come join us! October rehearsals are on the 10th and 24th at 3:00 p.m.
