Sleep issues are just a natural part of aging as the production of an essential hormone, melatonin, decreases. It’s not uncommon to hear seniors complain of getting tired earlier in the evening, waking up earlier in the morning, or even suffering from insomnia… having trouble falling and staying asleep! In addition, restless leg syndrome and periodic limbic movement disorder, as well as health conditions like diabetes, cognitive heart failure, kidney disease, or prostate issues in men, can also impact sleep. Common medications such as antidepressants and beta-blockers can also affect your restful night. If this sounds like you, be sure to speak with your doctor. Take charge of your sleep by diligently following these simple routines: y Follow a daily bedtime routine in which you go to bed and wake up at the same time each day — even on weekends.
