“ That boy or girl is really swearing in his or her heart but is afraid to say what he really thinks!” Or perhaps someone is thinking, “ Of course that boy or girl would say what he or she really means if older people were not listen ing!” Some children think that it is “ smart” to swear. They do not know that people who swear are showing their ignorance because they do not seem to be able to speak without using God’s name in vain. They have not learned enough words to talk without using the few “ swear words” that they know. Such people are to be pitied! The Lord Jesus said of some people, “ This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.” Some people curse with their heart and with their thoughts even though we may never hear their lips speak what we call “ swear words.” God looks at the heart and knows what we truly think of Him. To others God’s Son said, “Why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” If we profess to love Him with our lips but disobey Him in our actions and deeds we are not truly honoring Him. Not only our words, but our lack of rever ence for God’s house and for His Word, is taking His name in vain. Speaking jokingly of holy things is also dishonor ing to our Lord. Each day the prayer of our hearts as we waken should be, “ Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O, Lord, my strength and my redeemer.” May 11, 1952 THE RIGHT USE OF SUNDAY Ex. 20:8-11; Mark 2:27, 28; Luke 4:16ab; 13:10-17 Pointers On The Lesson This week’s lesson is based upon the commandment of the decalogue, “ Re member the sabbath day, to keep it holy” (Ex. 20:8). There is confusion in some circles as to the relationship between the sabbath and Sunday. Some consider them to be the same and so make no distinction. Others find in them no com mon principles and thus see no rela tionship between the two. Let us note the teaching of the Word of God upon this subject. The Origin of the Sabbath Idea Ex. 20:8-11 It is plain from this passage that the sabbath was given to Israel by God fol lowing their deliverance from bondage in Egypt as a reminder of the Creator’s finished work of creation. Furthermore, it was to remind them of the Creator’s ownership and authority over all His creation (v. 11). This day was to be a special sign between God and Israel as it is definitely set forth in Ex. 31:12-17«. This sign still exists between God and Israel. The sabbath was a day separate and distinct from the other days of the week. No work was to be done in it on pain of death (Ex. 31:15). In view of these things, it is quite evident that
