from the editor The last twelve months have been a special time for the AEC industry as a whole, and we at Civil + Structur- al Engineer Magazine have been lucky enough to cover projects from every corner of the industry, featuring projects and firms that made a difference–big or small. Our last twelve issues have been filled with examples of achievement from around the globe. Whether its a water infrastructure project that provides clean water to a village of 30 people in Romania or a massive lifting project in Times Square, our aim has and always will be to provide information about projects and thought leadership that are elevating the AEC industry. This banner year for the AEC industry was nearly universal as we covered projects in Romania, Saudi Ara- bia, Latvia, Egypt, Canada, France, and the United States to name a few. This is indicative of the global AEC industry’s constant movement to reexamine the way we interact with, plan, and construct the built environment. New tools and technologies are being developed and deployed at a rapid pace with the larger effect of revolutionizing the way the AEC industry works. The digital revolution is nothing new, but the reverberating effects of its adoption and settling are beginning to fuel this revolution. These new technologies and capabilities have made many aspects of the AEC industry more collabora- tive and has given rise to the necessity of collecting and interpreting data. In turn, this has fundamentally changed the way firms, project managers, owners, and stakeholders interact and think about the challenges that lie in front of the AEC industry. This paradigm shift has led to a more outward-facing understanding of how projects are constructed. As more and more processes become digital and new technologies emerge to further augment the way we construct the built environment, firms can no longer exist as silos of data and information. Rather, to support this new way of planning, constructing, and maintaining projects, firms have had to open themselves up to the outside from a digital perspective. While this paradigm shift certainly changes the way firms handle data and information about projects, it also changes the way they identify themselves and structure their business. Firms that previously wouldn’t take a risk on a new or challenging project now find themselves capable of overcoming specific obstacles because they are better equipped to identify, model, and communicate specific issues both internally and with other project stakeholders. Whether its using drones to provide geotechnical analysis at fractional cost or using more sophisticated BIM models to predict how wind will affect a high-rise construction in New York City, firms are becoming more confident in their ability to effectively use new technologies as part of their plan - ning and growth practices. As the AEC enters another new year, we do so on solid foundations secured by the trials and tribulations of the previous. With newly developing tools and a growing foundation of interconnectedness, the AEC industry is imbued with the confidence to tackle the challenges not only of the coming year, but of all the challenges even our youngest children will face. At Civil + Structural Engineer Magazine , we are excited to celebrate the coming year as the AEC industry rises to meet and overcomes the challenges of all those who depend upon the built environment.

It's awards season– the time of the year we start honoring and cel- ebrating some of the amazing accomplishments of people and firms in the AEC Industry. There is no better way to start than by recognizing those young professionals who have already made an impact through exceptional technical capability, leadership ability, effective teaching or research, or public service. The 2022 Rising Stars in the AEC Industry have benefited the design profession, their employers, project owners, and society. Our winners this year hold a diverse skill set and technical capabilities and have done outstanding work in their communities. They are already leaders and mentors in their firms, bringing new ideas, practices, and impacts beyond their technical capabilities. They come from all over North America and beyond–from Guam to New York, from Houston to Chi - cago. This year we have everyone from Presidents and Principals of firms to EIT Civil Engineers. This shows that no matter where you are in a company, you can be a Rising Star in this industry. I also want to take the time to acknowledge all of the people who nomi - nated all of our winners and those who did not win this year. Recogni - tion of a young professional's accomplishments, skill, leadership, etc. can go a long way in that young professional’s career. The knowledge that there is someone out there who recognizes what they are doing and takes the time to nominate them for an award like this is very important. I would encourage everyone to try to think of that young professional in your firm that deserves this type of credit. Letting the next generation of leaders know that their work is getting noticed is not only good for their career but can be very helpful for the long term success of your firm.

Andria (Andi) Schmid was promoted to Director of Civil Engineering for Ulteig Engineers, Inc. in late 2020, overseeing eight engineering teams that comprised 110 employees. Since taking this position, Schmid has grown into one of the stron - gest leaders in the rapidly growing firm, consistently demonstrating her ability to build organizational cohesion, competence, and resilience. In this time, she has increased net service revenue 32 percent year over year, successfully hiring more than 20 new employees. Schmid also established and leads a women’s Employee Support Group (ESG) to provide support to this critical, under-represented group of employees. Taking Sustainability to New Heights By Luke Carothers

As the AEC industry continues to prepare for and respond to the ef- fects of climate change, many firms are turning to alternative building materials that will be a catalyst for building a decarbonized future. One of the firms pushing this view of the near future is DIALOG. A multi-discipline design firm that incorporates architects, urban plan - ners, interior designers, and landscape architects as well as mechani- cal, structural, and electrical engineers, DIALOG has adopted the AIA 2030 Commitment to make all projects carbon neutral by 2030. As a part of this commitment, DIALOG is in part focusing on how we can achieve the ambitious goal of decarbonization while sustaining the vertical urbanization that is taking place all over the world. DIALOG has recently developed a Hybrid Timber Flooring System (HTFS) as one measure towards decarbonized vertical expansion. The HTFS is part of DIALOG’s Hybrid Timber Tower Prototype, which is intended to demonstrate that tall buildings can be a catalyst for the future. Crafted by DIALOG’s research and development team, the Hybrid Timber Tower Prototype suggests that building zero-carbon tall buildings is a viable option for the future. Seeing the immediate application of the HTFS for their client base, DIALOG chose to develop this aspect of the tower first and is currently pursu - ing a patent for the HTFS. DIALOG’s HTFS combines cross-laminated timber panels with steel and concrete. The HTFS system can also incorporate other smart building technologies such as photovoltaic, algae bioreactors, or other renewable energy solutions, which would allow a tower as tall as 105 stories to achieve carbon neutrality. The HTFS system is made with post-tensioned steel cables encased in concrete bands and embedded into cross laminated timber (CLT) panels. This system allows for a 40 foot column-free span, while standard CLT design systems currently span just three-quarters of that distance. Starting from the floor up is more than just a phrase. Typically, floor plates comprise approximately 70 percent of building materials used in high rise projects according to Craig Applegath, AIA, a founding partner at DIALOG and one of the project’s key leaders. This means that, when employed, the HTFS can drastically reduce a project’s carbon footprint. When further incorporated with renewable energy solutions, this system significantly reduces the environmental impact of tall building development in high density urban areas. Traditionally, concrete and steel are used in the construction of tall buildings due to code and safety requirements. However, because of the massive carbon footprint of these materials through the manufac- turing and installation processes, there is a drastic need to develop

alternative materials for these projects. Studies estimate that buildings in both the US and UK are responsible for up to 40 percent of annual CO2 emissions. Using sustainably harvested wood will drastically re - duce these carbon emissions, locking up carbon for decades. Planting young trees to replace those that have been harvested would continue to remove carbon from the atmosphere. Furthermore, the HTFS system helps developers and builders save money, open more of the calendar year to construction, and reduce safety and environmental risks onsite through prefabrication. Panels up to 10 feet by 40 feet are processed in a controlled environment, which means structural integrity can be tested and verified. CLT is bonded with reinforced concrete and high tensile steel, then the panels are delivered to the construction site ready to install. In the United States as in the UK, one of the biggest challenges facing the implementation of timber hybrid buildings is code enforcement. In recent years, there has been an increase in small and medium sized buildings using timber, but this has not yet been seen for large, high- rise buildings. These larger and taller buildings are limited in their use of timber due to structural, fire, and cost considerations. Once patented and approved by local authorities, the HFTS offers a potential solution to these problems. The HTFS is poised to make a significant contribution to the environ - mental goals of the AEC industry. Recently named one of Fast Com - pany’s 2021 “World Changing Ideas” in the architecture category, HTFS represents a significant building block towards the ultimate goal of carbon neutrality. While the world population continues to grow, these building blocks are foundational to ensuring that we can reduce our carbon footprint while continuing to develop high density urban buildings.

Historically, engineers have designed cities’ infrastructure to a baseline climate. However, given the inevitability of and rapid acceleration of climate change, this baseline is shifting. “Sea levels along the United States coastline are projected to rise a foot on average over the next three decades, which is equivalent to the total rise we’ve seen over the last 100 years,” notes D.J. Rasmussen, a climate change risk & resilience consultant in global built environment consulting firm Arup’s San Francisco office. “Because of the inertia of contributing factors, including increasing global temperatures associated with greenhouse gas emissions, coastal floods will become an inevitable problem for hundreds of millions of people living in low lying areas for centuries to come.” Adaptive City Planning Tackles the Uncertainty of Sea Level Rise By Liza Moriconi

lic projects,” says Vincent Lee, an associate principal and Global Water Skills Leader in Arup’s New York office. “With one of the waterfront developments we supported New York City in developing, a portion of the waterfront used a resist strategy to protect visitors in the public space and the residents in new housing. In another part of the park, Arup used a restore approach to cultivate coastal wetlands, providing benefits to both the natural environment and New Yorkers seeking refuge from the concrete jungle.” With long term planning, using a hybrid strategy provides a variety of options for infrastructure planners. Arup is also contributing to vari - ous planning projects that are connected to a large-scale transportation infrastructure project geared toward urbanizing Honolulu in an effi - cient and resilient way. Recently, they worked on a masterplan for a new transit-oriented development in Honolulu, which creates a linear park out of an existing flood control canal. “You wouldn’t know if you looked at it, but the park design is providing an increased level of pro- tection for the area by embedding a seawall underneath the landscape,” shares Hogan. “This work couples resilience with revitalization and sustainable transportation. I love to see projects that are not only proac - tive in putting infrastructure in place to defend against the worst to come with climate change, but that also achieves other co-benefits and enhances the public realm at the same time.” When deciding which pathway is the best proactive method to protect against sea level rise, infrastructure planners must take into account the option with the least potential regret. The goal is to avoid a “stranded asset,” or an infrastructure investment that did not survive the entirety of its intended lifecycle. The Flexible Adaptation Pathways approach supplies options for making infrastructure investments that are flexible, to better stand the test of time and avoid potential regrets. Flexibility is an ideal planning parameter that is paramount in climate change adaptation. “Superstorm Sandy was a wakeup call for New York City,”

To provide proactive planning measures, Arup uses a resilience- focused planning approach called “Flexible Adaptation Pathways,” which focuses on providing dynamic and adaptive planning solutions for many climate-change-related uncertainties. “Flexible Adaptation Pathways are often compared to a subway map because they can offer multiple routes to arrive at the same destination,” says Jack Hogan, a senior risk and resilience engineer in Arup’s San Francisco office. “In some ways, a static planning process can be destined to fail. Instead of trying to predict the water level in 100 years, this approach pro- vides the opportunity to change course and switch from one strategy to another as we gather more climate data to achieve the least potential regret.” The adaptive planning approach recognizes that every situa - tion is different, and there may be better defensive approaches suitable for different projects. “Deliberate adaptive planning is entirely differ - ent from how leaders have approached natural hazard preparedness. Instead of implementing a solution and forgetting about the problem until something goes wrong again, Flexible Adaptation Pathways keep attention on the issue over time,” adds Rasmussen. Flexible Adaptation Pathways chart specific decision outcomes on a timeline for infrastruc - ture planners to visualize how something, like a seawall or levee, might perform against different sea level rise scenarios. It can also provide insight into when a specific infrastructure investment should be made or when a switch should be made to another strategy. In developing coastal resilience, there are three main strategies a city might look to: resisting, restoring, and retreating. These solutions are not mutually exclusive, and using a hybrid approach typically provides the best line of defense against sea level rise. Resisting includes de - fining a specific level of protection, restoring includes implementing nature-based solutions, and retreating includes pulling back from the shoreline. “Making these decisions is a result of a robust engagement process with stakeholders and community groups, especially with pub-
