Unitarian Church. The three propositions submitted by Dr. Potter are—that the Bible is the infallible Word of God; that an evolutionist ^cannot be a Christian; and that the miraculous Virgin Birth of Jesus Christ is an essential Christian doctrine, to each of which he asked that Dr. Stra- tori take the affirmative. Half an hour after receiving-Dr. Potter’s letter, Dr. Straton accepted the challenge, offering two additional subjects for debate, viz: that Jesus Christ is the Divine Son of God and that He will return in bodily presence to this earth and establish the reign of universal peace and righteousness. In issuing his challenge, Dr. Potter spoke of the ‘‘seri ousness of the danger inherent in allowing these Funda mentalists to continue unanswered and unchecked in their defamatory charges and extravagant statements.’! . - In contrast with the report given in “The Herald’’ is the editorial published in “The World,” which is commented on in the editorial section of this ,issue, under the caption “A Confession of Faith and a Call to Arms.”, ’ VV. Carbon exists in three forms,—the chunky stuff we know as coal, the slippery black graphite we use in lead pencils, and the most precious of stones, the diamond. Treated by acids, alkalies, fire, they are identically the same element, —carbon. There are three kinds of Christians: the coal Christians, the graphite Christians, and the diamond Christians. Out of the pressure of the love of Christ, out of the fires of surrendered sin, the coal Christian is born. He is thé upright business man, the clean politician, the high-idealed statesman. His power erects honorablé business institu tions, founds just governments and turns the wheels of in- dustry. The graphite Christian also is born through yielding to the loving pressure of Christ, and the sin-purging fire of His blood. He is useful in more artistic and specialized ways: “Paradise Lost,” the “Messiah,” the “Last Supper,” are soine of the works of graphite Christians. But: there are diamond Christians. Self ¡n them has mplted away in.,the terrific heat of suffering and submis sion, till the, .idenffty of, the person is swallowed up in the “Light, of ihh ^orld,” ¡which, nre seejSbinJpg in theirj¡hearts. It is these Christians who lead nations to righteousness, Paul, Luther, Wesley, Livingston, Moody,—how their lights shine and sparkle undimmed across the years. And the only difference in the three kinds of carbon, and the three kinds of Christians, is the amount of heat, and the amount of pressure, they have passed through. How much will you go through for Christ—Mrs. W. C. Vining. CARBON CHRISTIANS " ’\
