that her idea of how to be saved must be wrong and asked a big question, “How then do we get saved ?” I turned her to the Bible, God’s Word, for the only true answer to that question. I showed her from Romans 3:10 and 23 that “ There is none righteous, no, not one . . . For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Then I read John 3 :16: “ For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that who soever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life,” which shows us that God loved a world of sinners so much that He sent Jesus, His only Son, to die for our sins. Then we went to Isaiah 53:6: “ All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” I told her that this verse shows us that when Jesus died on the cross, God laid all our sins on Him and punished Him for them.

RUBY’S QUESTION What does it mean to be saved?
“Oh, no,” she answered. “ F guess you are not saved then,” I replied. She hung her head and said, “ No, I guess I’m not.” “ I’m not that good either,” I said. Ruby’s eyes grew big and I could see that she was thinking deeply. You see, I was a minis ter. And if, as she said, one had to be “ awful, awful good” to be a Christian, then I was not saved either. And if the preacher was not saved, then who was saved anyway? Then Ruby began to see
“ D UBY’ are you a Christian? K Are you saved?” Ruby was a ten-year-old friend of mine and we were out in the yard to gether. “ I don’t know,” she answered. “Well, how do you become saved?” I continued. “ By being good.” “How good do you have to be ?” “Awful good.” “How awful good?” I asked. “Awful, awful good,” she said with deep earnestness. “ Are you that good?”
