Valentine Weekend fishing derby Couples who enjoy ice fishing together will love what’s in store at Clarence Point Bay on Valentine’s Day this year. Alain Masson is organizing Al’s Annual Fishing Derby for February 14 in the bay all day, with part of the entry fee proceeds from the tournament going to the Rockland Food Bank.The fishing tournament is part of a Family Day Weekend event, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. There is a 2 p.m. deadline that day for anglers to register themselves for the tournament. Weigh-in deadline for fish is 6 p.m. at the Clarence Point derby site near the ferry landing. Fish must still be alive when brought for weigh-in. Flag Day at Hammond school The Maple Leaf, Canada’s flag, turns 50 this month and the students and staff at Pope John Paul II Catholic Elementary School in Hammond are planning a special assembly in honour of the occasion. The official anniversary of the Maple Leaf is February 15, so a February 13 assembly is scheduled at the school. Preliminary plans for the assembly include student presentations and games to commemorate Canada’s national symbol.
