How We Support Athletes on and off the Field

As summer winds down, students are heading back to school and back to the

field for their favorite classes and activities. I remember this time of year fondly. While I was sad for summer to end, I was also excited to learn and participate in my favorite sports and clubs again. I was a wrestler all through high school. These days, I’m more of a fan than a participant. (Go Buckeyes!) Kids aren’t the only ones learning. Around the office, my staff and I are perpetual students. Our team continuously studies and trains to provide better treatments and utilize developments in the field of dentistry to benefit our patients. We recently got back from a training in Denver that focused on the development and progression of sleep apnea in kids. Our office also hosted a group of medical practitioners last month, and we educated them on developments in diagnosing and treating sleep apnea. Attendees included neurologists, allergists, physicians, and chiropractors. By connecting with other medical professionals on this important topic, we can see to it that sleep apnea is diagnosed and treated sooner, preventing detrimental treatments from being prescribed and ensuring a better quality of life for our patients. In the spirit of learning, I got my Team Dentist Certification in June, a qualification I earned through the Academy of Sports Dentistry. It’s allowing us to be aligned with student- athletes’ needs. We can now provide custom

mouthguards to the community. These are personalized to provide the most safety and comfort to athletes. (We can even make them in a student’s school colors.)

Helping athletes through dentistry is something I’ve been passionate about throughout my career. While I was at Ohio State, we made custom mouthguards for the football team. Now, in addition to making custom mouthguards, we’re collaborating with an organization that’s connected to professional sports teams in our area. Through this connection, we’ll explore the potential to do airway wellness work with retired NFL players. The organization, the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA), is a great one, helping to provide former professional athletes with a better quality of life and connect them to resources. We’re excited to be part of giving back to these incredible athletes. Finding ways to connect to our community and give back through our skills and knowledge in dentistry has always been a core value of Nagy Family Dental Group. It’s an exciting time to be in dentistry. We are at the forefront of amazing research, especially when it comes to sleep disordered breathing in children and athletes. We are starting to look more at how it develops and some of the ways we can prevent it. Inside this edition, you can read more about this topic and some of the factors to be aware of.

I hope you have a wonderful August. As always, if you have any questions between appointments, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Until next time,

-Dr. Nagy

Every year, as students prepare to head back to school, they gather their backpacks, pencils, notebooks, and other supplies. For some students, this time of year weighs more heavily on them than on others. As their families struggle to equip their young learners with the long list of school supplies that are often asked of them, they could really use some extra support. Every year, we help local back-to-school drive efforts and support our local school. Last year, we sponsored an essay contest at a local grade school. The students had the opportunity to go to Washington, D.C., through their school, so we sponsored the contest to help them raise the money for the trip. The top essay won a $500 scholarship plus spending money, and the runner-up received prizes, as well. It was fun because we got to feel like we were part of the excitement the students felt for the contest and their trip. It was a joy to read students’ essays and learn about what was important to them. We don’t want to just send a check; we want to be part of fostering learning for our future generations. It also helps us stay connected and in touch with our community and people’s needs. In that spirit, we frequently partner with Love INC and other local organizations. Love INC serves as a connection between resources in the community and people who are in need. It’s very rewarding to play a small part in what they do. Want to lend a hand to our community this back-to-school season? There are so many great ways to give back. At Nagy Family Dental Group, we’ll be collecting school items through Aug. 20. If your kids have outgrown their school supplies or have leftovers from previous years, please bring them by the office! Every bit helps. By sharing the things we’ve been blessed with, we can ensure our community and its students have what they need to thrive. That’s why Nagy Family Dental Group pitches in to lend a hand. You’re Brushing With What?

15 Crazy Flavors of Toothpaste and Floss While mint is unquestionably the nation’s favorite flavor of toothpaste and floss, every once in a while, you’ll come across someone who dislikes the taste. How do they deal with dental hygiene? A few big-name brands offer cinnamon options or even mysteriously dubbed “original” or “regular” flavors. But why stop there? Here are some of the more unique flavors available to delight kids and adults alike. DENTAL DESSERT Brushing your teeth is usually what you do after having dessert. But with flavors like cupcake, chocolate chip, vanilla bean, licorice, Coca-Cola with lemon, and vanilla chai, your morning and nighttime routines just got a bit sweeter. Most of these kid-friendly flavors are available on Amazon, so feel free to indulge your sweet tooth without worrying about cavities. FRUIT OF THE TUBE Everyone loves fruit. At least, that’s what the makers of these toothpastes and flosses are counting on. The California-based company Cocofloss, founded by two sisters, specializes in fruit flavors with tasty options like fresh coconut, summer watermelon, pure strawberry, cara cara orange, and passion fruit. In the world of toothpaste, Schmidt’s, a plant-based company, is a standout with a coconut lime flavor guaranteed to make your toothbrush taste tropical. SUSPICIOUSLY SAVORY Considering the sizzle bacon has had in recent pop culture, it’s no surprise that it invaded the bathroom counter. If you’re bacon obsessed, Perpetual Kid has just the product for you. See for yourself with its description: “Brushing your teeth with a strip of fried bacon is tricky. If it’s too crisp, it will break apart as you brush, and if it’s too limp, you won’t be able to remove any of the plaque. So, when it’s time to brush your teeth, leave the bacon strips for breakfast and try this bacon toothpaste.” Pair it with some bacon-flavored floss from quirky company Archie McPhee for the full breakfast experience, and if that isn’t wacky enough, roll the dice with floss that tastes like pickles or ranch dressing.

How Does Sleep Apnea Start?

Much like the famous “chicken or egg” question, the origins of disordered breathing can often be elusive. Is it genetic? Environmental? Both?

Research is uncovering more and more answers about sleep apnea, allowing dentists and health care providers to better diagnose and treat it. As with many disorders, in the case of sleep apnea, both environmental and genetic predispositions can lead people to develop it. In terms of genetic predispositions, mouth size and shape can play a part in disordered breathing. Build and body type may also be determinants, and sleep apnea is cyclical. We find that adults who are overweight often have sleep apnea, and it may be the lack of healthy sleep that’s affecting their weight. Observations of athletes have uncovered a pattern of mouth breathing in order to meet the oxygen demands of their physical activity. Over time, mouth breathing may start to change the shape of the jaw. This changes the shape of the airway, leading to a predisposition to distressed breathing, including sleep apnea. These are some of the reasons we often see sleep apnea in adults. Disordered breathing often goes undiagnosed in children or is treated with methods that don’t solve the root cause but actually make the

condition worse. By the time they’ve grown up, those patterns are set. Ten years of snoring leads the soft tissues in the back of the throat to change because of the force. As we age, our bodies can’t resist this force as much, and we succumb to the condition. The condition grows worse, and you end up with severe sleep apnea. The good news is that with new research comes new solutions to treating this disorder. At Nagy Family Dental Group, we are well equipped to diagnose and treat sleep apnea in both children and adults. Talk to us if you have noticed any symptoms of sleep apnea, like snoring, frequent morning headaches, or extreme tiredness, in yourself or your family members. We can do more if we diagnose and treat it early.
