You may be wondering why I am quoting this classic

Eurythmic’s song? Allow me to explain… As the P.E.O. Educational Loan Fund (ELF) trustees were reviewing applications this year, we became aware of numerous sets of sisters (all biological sisters, some P.E.O. sisters) who had each received ELF loans. Howwonderful! Cue the toe tapping… sisters are doin’ it for themselves! As your chapter looks for potential ELF candidates, we encourage you to look at past recipients as they are a fabulous resource for future ELF loan recipients. Here are the stories of two of our sister sets:

Elizabeth and Emily Gehling, the second and third in a family of ELF recipients, were more familiar with P.E.O., courtesy of their aunt, Jean Tucker, HL, Dubuque, Iowa. Jean has tirelessly supported three of her nieces with ELF loans. Emily, who just returned from a semester in Florence, Italy, will receive her double major B.A. in history and anthropology with a spring 2022 graduation. She has a clear vision for her future with goals to obtain both a master’s and Ph.D. in bioarchaeology. Elizabeth Gehling, with a double major in history and classical archaeology, will also be receiving her B.A. in May 2022. She recently returned from five months in Athens, Greece, where she studied digital archaeology, the history of Athens, and took part in an excavation. Her future goals include an advanced degree in archaeology. Potential ELF recipients are close at hand, whether you are shopping at a farm market or sharing dinner with the family. Sisters, reach out, tap your toe…find a new ELF recipient.

Twin sisters Christina and Yana Clothier , while working as cashiers in a farm and produce store, had an encounter with Kathleen Ayers, DB, Portland, Oregon. Impressed with their strong work ethic and ambition, this dedicated sister readily shared the mission of P.E.O. and together they forged ahead. Christina received her ELF loan in the fall of 2021 while studying for her double major B.A. in economics and politics, policy, law and ethics. She plans to enroll in graduate school after her undergraduate degree is completed to pursue a Master’s in Public Policy before eventually putting it to use in the sphere of politics and public policy. Yana Clothier, working toward a B.S. in zoology, received her ELF loan a few months later. Yana aspires to achieve her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and be a force in teaching people proper animal care. She holds herself to a high standard of education and believes that without the drive and passion that she currently holds, she would be unable to pursue her career objectives. Say the Clothier sisters, “we could not be more grateful knowing that our financial burden may not have to be as scary as what we had been told. We are grateful to P.E.O. and its generous donors.”
