Claude Vachon makes another run for council

ROCKLAND | Last time he got almost half of the voters in Ward 1 supporting him at the polls. Claude Vachon hopes to do bet- ter this October in his second bid for one of the seats on City of Clarence-Rockland council. “I wantWard 1 to be represented by some- one willing and able to work,” Vachon said, explaining why he was making another at- tempt at replacing incumbent Coun. Michel Thivierge at the council table. “As a taxpayer I’m tired of paying someone who doesn’t do the work.” Thivierge has decided not to run for re- election for health reasons. Vachon appreci- ates that but noted he has been critical of the Ward 1 councillor’s overall performance for the past few terms. “He didn’t do any work for Ward 1.” When he ran against Thivierge in the 2010 civic election, Vachon earned 696 votes to Thivierge’s slim majority of 747. This time Vachon will run against Jean-Marc Lalonde, who is also campaigning to replace Thiv- ierge as Ward 1’s voice on council. Vachon expressed respect for Lalonde’s past work in both municipal and provincial politics but added that his competitor has fulfilled his obligations for political service to the com- munity. Vachon thinks he has a good chance at beating out Lalonde for the seat. He is al- ready working out a list of goals to start hammering on should he succeed at the polls this October. “In Ward 1 we need our infrastructure renovated,” he said, listing St. Jacques,

Cécile a trois sœurs : Alice (Adrien Duhamel), Rita (Hervé St-Jacques), Agnès (George Drury) et un frère Sylvio (Marguerite Devine), tous résidants de Rockland. Trois filles naissent du mariage de Thomas et de Cécile; elles sont toutes de Rockland. Thérèse (feu Sandy Cunningham), Monique (Gilles Lamoureux), parents de Luc (Carole Marchand), Lynne (Luc Raymond) et Denis, Judith (feu Jean-NoëlWolfe), parents de Jacynthe (Denis Éthier), Jean (Sylvie Côté), Nathalie (Pierre Martin), Marc et Marianne.

Vachon is willing to consider double-sur- face treatment of Poupart and other roads as a reasonable and cheaper alternative to asphalt paving. Alfred-Plantagenet Town- ship public works is using double-surfacing on several of the concession roads to pro- vide a smooth surface over the underlying gravel and dirt substrate. Double-surface treatment is good for about 10 years of or- dinary traffic wear and cheaper than full as- phalt paving which has an average lifespan of 20 years before it needs redoing. Vachon also wants to get residents in Ward 1 more involved on issues affecting their area. Than includes holding regular “town hall” style community meetings in the ward for residents to express their views and air complaints. “If I get elected, I want to hear what other people have to say,” he said.

sport du curling à Rockland. Durant ses années au conseil de ville, il insiste jusqu’à ce que la ville de Rockland achète son premier camion à incendie. Le 3 novembre 1988 après une longue maladie,Thomas décède au Foyer Saint-Joseph de Rockland à l’âge de 87 ans. Cécile demeure à la Résidence Simon jusqu’à son décès, le 1er juillet 2000 à l’âge de 92 ans. La famille Girard laisse un souvenir inoubliable dans Rockland par sa joie de vivre et son implication dans la paroisse. Debout près de sa chaise de barbier, Thomas a toujours des histoires à raconter à ses nombreux copains. Doués d’un entregent exceptionnel,Thomas et Cécile sont entourés d’amis de tous les âges.
