AUGUST 2017

Ribbon Cutting to Remember CELEBRATING MAIN STREET’S NEW ADDITION IN STYLE

We’ve enjoyed our new office for a little over two months now, and it’s been wonderful. The additional space is worth the months of construction, and things have been going great since our grand opening celebration.

proud to know this new addition isn’t just allowing for more room and technology to treat my patients — it also helps to revitalize the area. I love Malone and don’t plan to step back anytime soon, which can surprise some people.

On the day of the opening, I ran over to Yando’s to grab more ice, when a woman came up and asked me, “Who did you sell your practice to?” This was certainly news to me! When I told her I hadn’t sold the practice, she asked, “Well, who’s doing all the work at the office?”

“I am.”

Ribbon-cutting ceremony

Malone has amazing artists!

I want to thank everyone who joined us that Saturday in June. We didn’t get an exact attendance count, but we did go through 180 free hot dogs, so I’d say we saw at least 200 people throughout the day. It was pretty crazy, but everything flowed beautifully, thanks to my team who all jumped in to lend a hand. We were joined by the local radio station; Gary Yando, my very first patient; Mayor Joe Riccio; Town Supervisor Howard Maneely; village trustees; and the Chamber of Commerce, who provided the ribbon and giant scissors for our ribbon-cutting ceremony. Chamber executive director Susan Levitre acted as our ceremony MC and introduced the various speakers, including Mayor Riccio, who gave an official proclamation.

“You? You have gray hair. What are you doing renovating your office?”

Well, she’s not wrong, but I’ve never seen age as a reason to step back from my practice. There’s a quote I like from Zig Ziglar, which I shared at the opening, and I want to share it with you all now: “I’m not gonna give up, shut up, or let up, until I’m taken up … As a matter of fact, I’m just getting warmed up!”

The finished product!

It’s not everyday a dentist’s office is treated to such pomp and circumstance, but we’re located right on Main Street, so it’s no wonder everyone feels a little invested in our building. People were very impressed with the quality of the workmanship and how the building turned out. The building completely changed the look of Main Street for the better. I’m

This process wasn’t easy, but it’s sure been fun! I really am just getting warmed up, and I’m excited to see what we’ll do next.

Thank you again to the local artists who let us hang their work inside the new building; to the fellow business who donated prizes for us to give away, including Yando’s and Arnold’s Lumber; to Holy Family School for lending us the tables and chairs; and to all my patients who came out in support of the opening. It was an amazing success, and I look forward to seeing you all again in our new building for years to come. – Dr. Kevin Poupore

Jennifer Parkinson, Amy Beach, and Michelle Marlow all thank Barb Gokey for cleaning the construction mess each week!

BACK TO SCHOOL = BIG SAVINGS August’s Best Deals

Vehicles According to USAA, August is a great time to start shopping for a new vehicle. New-year model cars and trucks are trickling onto lots around the country, and dealerships are slightly more motivated to get rid of last year’s stock. Use this time to do research and browse dealer selection. For even more potential savings, USAA suggests visiting the dealership on a Monday or Tuesday and later in the day. School Supplies It goes without saying, but August is the best time to stock up on all kinds of school supplies, from pens to notebooks. But as Lifehacker. com notes, it’s not just school supplies that are on sale. It’s also a great time to stock up on general office and stationery supplies for work or the home. And as CBS MoneyWatch reports, you’ll save big on dorm and office furniture.

August is back-to-school season, and that means you’ll find plenty of items on sale — everything students and families need to start the new school year right. Retailers, both online and off, are vying for your dollar this month, and they know just how much families love to save. Here’s a sample of the items you’ll find on sale in August. Laptops Finding the perfect laptop for yourself or your kids might take a little research, but it’s research that will pay off in the form of big savings. You’ll find discounts at most retailers that offer laptops, including the manufacturers themselves. Apple, HP, Dell, and others typically offer incentives on top of discounts (such as gift cards), so it’s in your best interest to look around to find the deal that works for you. Storage Containers With millions of college students getting ready to head off to school, many retailers are taking advantage of the fact that these kids need a place to store all of their stuff. You, too, can take advantage of these sales to stock up on storage bins and boxes for just about any purpose, from food to clothing storage. In addition to storage containers, you’ll find many home-organization products on sale, as well.

KNOW YOUR ENEMY

Treating gum disease can be a tricky process. While prevention and deep cleaning are often effective to avoid extreme cases of periodontal disease, once tartar begins to work its way into the deep structures of the gums, it’s a much more complicated process. But emerging technologies are beginning to enable periodontists to pinpoint the cause of gum disease and eliminate it at the source. Periodontal disease arises as swarms of bacteria begin to eat away at the gums. Over 350 discrete species of bacteria participate in the deterioration of human gums, and each of them is utterly unique. Each of these microscopic species carries its own distinct genetic blueprint embedded within its DNA. If you’ve ever seen a picture of DNA, you know that it is composed of two separate, twisting strands, connected by a series of “ladder

rungs.” These rungs are made up of two separate nitrogen bases bonded together at the center. Each base only connects to a specific other base — adenine pairs with thymine, and cytosine pairs with guanine. Though the way in which these bases bond is particular, the order in which each pair appears as you move down the “ladder” has an infinite number of permutations. When we investigate this arrangement within the cells of a particular organism, we learn its unique genetic blueprint. Periodontists are now able to extract a sample of the bacteria afflicting your gums with a cotton swab of saliva. Then the sample is sent to a lab and run through a DNA analysis. The results of the test detail the specific strains of bacteria that are present in the gums, giving the periodontist a much clearer picture of the problem.

The first step in combatting the enemy under our gums is to know what we’re up against, and DNA testing enables us to do just that.

THE EFFECTS OF NEGATIVE NEWS It’s nearly impossible to log on to social media or turn on the TV without seeing something distressing. It could be a local crime story, a terrorist attack, or — at the very least — reactions to one of the most polarizing presidents in American history. Another recent study found that the journalists themselves who are constantly exposed to graphic images score higher on PTSD, depression, and alcohol consumption than the average American.

Why Is the News So Negative? As news media revenue goes down and people become desensitized, news organizations feel the pressure to show emotionally relevant material such as crime and accidents. At a basic level, for something to be “newsworthy” — negative or not — it needs to be the exception to the rule, not the norm. That means watching the news might give you an inaccurate view of what daily life is like in the world. How to Fight the Negativity It’s important to understand important issues of the day. But when the news becomes too much, psychologists encourage you to take a break with some good news — or no news at all. Your TV might have you think the only three events in the world are war, crime, and sports. But advances in medicine and technology happen all the time! Seek out those stories, or take a break from news altogether. That’s when no news can become good news.

Just reading it now might even be bothersome, so we’ll move on. Instead of dwelling on what's troubling, let’s focus on how to protect our mental health. The Psychology of Bad News A study by Psychology Today found what we already knew: People feel sadder after watching negative news than positive news. Got it. But here’s what we didn’t know: People who watch negative news feel worse about pre-existing worries than people who watch happy or neutral events. That means people watching the news don’t just feel anxious about the world, they feel more anxious about their own lives. British psychologist Dr. Graham Davey, who specializes in the effects of media violence, says negative news can affect how you interact with the world around you. As you consume threatening news, you’re more likely to spot threats in your day-to-day activities that aren’t there, which leads to anxiety.

View of a Lifetime WHERE TO WATCH THE GREAT AMERICAN ECLIPSE On August 21, 2017, the greatest show of the summer will take place in the United States: a total solar eclipse! In the last 100 years, only 14 solar eclipses were visible from the U.S., and none have occurred in the new millennium. This eclipse will be visible across North America, but the path of totality — the area where the moon completely covers the sun — will only fall in the continental U.S., leading this cosmic event to be called The Great American Eclipse. If you’re already in the United States, a day’s road trip is all you need to grab a front row seat for this rare astronomical occurrence. Need a place to watch the eclipse in the Southern U.S.? Then get yourself to South Carolina! The state capital of Columbia is almost right in the middle of the path of totality, with the duration of totality lasting a full 2 1/2 minutes. Plenty of hotels make Columbia a great viewing location for those who don’t want to camp out, and the vibrant city life means you’ll have lots to do even when the eclipse is over. Columbia, South Carolina

Sandhills, North Platte, Nebraska

In the heartlands, you’ll be hard pressed to find a more perfect viewing location than the Sandhills of western Nebraska. The August weather in this area has a reputation for ideal conditions for watching the eclipse, so there’s less of a chance cloudy skies will block your view. With wide open skies, low rolling hills, and no towering buildings to get in the way, the Sandhills are sure to be a popular viewing spot. Why not view the eclipse from an official NASA broadcast station? The Museum of Idaho has been designated an Official NASA Observation Site, and the museum is hosting four days of events to celebrate. Enjoy live presentations, technology demonstrations, and special exhibits as you prepare to watch the total eclipse with NASA scientists. A total solar eclipse is an event like nothing you’ve ever witnessed before. Be sure to visit the official website of The Great American Eclipse at greatamericaneclipse.com for everything you need to know about this once-in-a-lifetime sight!
